Unit 64 – Motion Graphics and Compositing Video
HA1 – Motion Graphics Now – Task 3 Analysis
Sequence:
Type of motion graphic and purpose:
What is its purpose and specific subject?
(Title, Credits, animated captions, stings,
indents, interactive menus, web banner)
The motion graphics is an opening title sequence. The TV show is Breaking Bad and is a crime drama set in the
style of a contemporary Western.
Description:
What do you see and what do you read
from this? What symbolism is there?
How suitable is the sequence for its
purpose?
You see the title ‘Breaking Bad’ with BR and BA being in element style squares. This instantly tells the viewer
that the show has something to do with science, either physically or chemistry based. Yellow smoke drifts across
the screen to symbolize the methamphetamine element of the series and also its mysteriousness. The title also
features the name of its creator but, nothing more. The background also features periodic elements. The
sequence is very appropriate as it is loud, shocking and happens quite fast giving the viewer the idea that the
show is a type of drama.
Techniques used:
Animation, visual effects, colour, audio,
graphics, movement.
Blur, sharpen, distortion, rotation, opacity.
There is a lot of animation used, most notably the green titles which appear at the forefront of the screen with
the opacity forming the letters from 0% to 100% in around 2 seconds. The letters BR and BA are in elemental
square form and appear first, before being joined by the rest of the letters. The yellow smoke then moves across
the screen and fades away the titles replacing them with the name of the creator of the series. Throughout, a
Western style music is playing which gives off the illusion that the series is a spin on the Western genre. The
titles end with a distinct rattlesnake type noise before fading to black.
Technical comments:
Video Format, Screen Ratio, Resolution,
Frame rate, Compression
I am not sure of how to find the information on each of these subjects as it was a video sourced from YouTube.
The quality was at 360p with the ability to extend to 480p.
