This type of motion graphic is an opening sequence. It precedes episodes within a series and acts as a brief
insight and taster for the viewing audience.

The sequence is very dark and mysterious, featuring the images of the main actors and actresses within the
programme, usually in positions such as looking off to the side or pointing a gun. It is clear from the start that it
is to be set in Victorian London, due partly to both the music and the style of the people’s clothing. It also
features images of very Victorian stereotypes such as old-fashioned policemen. Also featured are old fashioned
houses and a brief image of a morgue. These set the dark tone for the series. The sequence also has the names
of the actors and actresses featured, in a cut out-letter style. The title of the series, Ripper Street, is also done in
this fashion.

The animation is somewhat hectic, with many components moving together to form a backdrop for prime things
on screen (actors, actresses, text). The graphics are used a lot for the images of people within the series, which
twist, rotate and come in from various angles. Other effects include silhouettes and the quick-paced reduction in
opacity of elements within the footage. The effects are numerous and make for a very active opening sequence.
The music is very Victorian-themed and fits very well with the dark tone of the series, changing pace at different
points and ending abruptly with a shot of the three main detectives from the back.

There will have been a lot of video composting within the video as images of people and text have been placed
over various other things. I cannot view any other technical components, as the video was sourced from
YouTube. The quality it is currently at is 480p, with the ability to extend to 720p (HD).
