Title Sequence Analysis

This is done to make the audience unsure and unaware of what's going on. It creates a mysterious and eerie setting for the season. This is a very common convention for horror and thriller films as it builds up tension as well as attracting the audience as they will be intrigued to know what will happen next. The close up and extreme close up shots are of a range of objects that are linked to the horror genre. For example, throughout the title sequence a range jars of organs and skulls. These objects show the audience what the series will be about and what it will include. Also in the title sequence a range of baby photos are shown, usually baby photos are not usually linked to the horror/thriller therefore including the baby photos in the title sequence is a twist. This foreshadows the rest of the series in which the series has a twisted and messed up plot.
- 3. SoundSound The song used for the title sequence of the show is very unusual, this is done to foreshadow the series because the plot is also extremely unusual. As the sequence begins all that can be heard is the sound of wind, this creates an eerie effect which is a convention of the horror genre. Seconds later a new sound is added to build up the sequence, the sound is very digitalised. This sound is introduced at 0:08 seconds when a picture of a baby is shown, the next couple of times this sound repeats is when the actors names are shown, some of the times the sound is more distorted than others. This will attract the audience as they will think the same digitalised sound will keep repeating. Throughout the music a drum can be heard, this represents the sound of someone's heart beating. This could be the audiences or even the characters that are living the strange and twisted storyline. It also correlates with the hearts that are in jars throughout the sequence.
- 4. LightingLighting The lighting throughout the title sequence is quite dark with some flashes of light. This is an extremely common convention of the horror genre as many terrifying things take place in the dark. The darkness in the trailer also foreshadows and represents the plot of the series, the depth and the darkness of it whilst creating a feeling of mystery and suspense for the audience.
- 5. EditingEditing The editing in the sequence ranges between very fast jump cuts and a slower style. The slower style of editing is used to ensure the audience can see specific and significant parts of the title sequence. For example, at the start of the sequence a dark room can be seen and the only thing giving some light into the room seems to be a torch. During this shot shelves and a hole in the floor can be seen. There are no quick jump cuts in this part as the editor wants to make the audience feel like they are searching for something as well as intriguing them. The fast jump cuts are used to confuse the audience as well as give a teaser. A popular shot in the title sequence is panning. Panning is used to create suspense as well as to show more of the scene, therefore building suspense and tension for the audience as they are unaware of what will be there.
