Motion and Time
What is Motion?
● Motion is a act of change
in position of an object
over time

b
Types of Motion: straight
line Motion
● Straight line motion is a
motion of an object in a
straight line.
● Examples: a car driving on a
straight road, an elevator
going up or down
Types of Motion: Circular Motion
● Circular motion is movement of an object
in a circular path.
● Examples: Earth revolves around the sun,
Motion of giant wheel
Types of Motion: Periodic
Motion
● Oscillatory motion is back-and-
forth movement
● Motion of an object repeat itself
over an equal interval of time.
● Examples: a pendulum swinging,
a child on a swing
Green car covered 20 km in 1hr
Red car covered 15 km in 1hr
The distance moved by an object in a given
interval of time can help us to decide which
one is faster or slower.
Green car has the highest speed
Speed
● Speed is indicates how fast an object is moving
● The distance covered by an object in a unit time as
the speed of an object.
● Speed = Total distance covered
Total time taken
● Unit of speed - m/s, km/ hr
According to speed
● Non Uniform motion
If the speed of an object moving along a straight line keeps
changing, its motion is said to be non uniform motion.
● uniform motion
An object moving along a straight line with a constant speed is
said to be in uniform motion.
The distance between two stations is 240 km. A
train takes 4 hours to cover this distance.
Calculate the speed of the train?
● To and fro movement
● Well known example of
periodic motion
● Time period
Time taken by the
pendulum to complete
one oscillation.
