A triggering factor of the eastward propagation of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is proposed from a case study of the first MJO generated in late October during CINDY2011. The proposed scenario is that the eastward propagation of the MJO is triggered by an extratropical cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere. The ridge and trough pair meridionally extending between 30°S~15°N accompanied by the extratropical cyclone was found to be completely synchronized with the eastward propagating MJO convection. The ascending areas of the cold front extending from the extratropical cyclone partially combined with those of the MJO and the large-scale ridge and trough below 500 hPa were formed across the midlatitudes in the Southern Hemisphere and the tropics. The convection center of the MJO shifted eastward as a result of the westerly winds in the tropics, expanding eastward by the zonal pressure gradient force between the ridge and trough.

Determination of fwhm for soliton trapping
This study investigates a system using a series of ring resonators to trap and stop bright and dark soliton pulses within a nonlinear waveguide. Bright and dark soliton pulses are input into the system consisting of micro and nano ring resonators. Simulation results show that the bright soliton pulse can be stopped at 1556.7 nm with a FWHM of 12.5 pm, while the dark soliton pulse can be stopped at 1558.99 nm with a FWHM of 24 pm. This trapping of soliton pulses using ring resonators has potential applications for optical data storage and secure communication.

The FAST project aims to build a next generation ultra-high energy cosmic ray observatory consisting of an array of single-pixel telescopes called FAST (Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes). Each telescope would have a 1 square meter aperture and camera with 4 photomultiplier tubes covering a 30x30 degree field of view. An array of 500 such telescopes spaced 20 km apart could cover an area of 150,000 square km. This would provide over 10 times the exposure of the Telescope Array and allow for precision measurements of UHECR spectrum and mass composition above 10^19.5 eV as well as searches for ultra-high energy photons and neutrinos. Abstract
We present the first measurement of the Σ beam asymmetry in η photoproduction on the neutron in the photon energy range from threshold to 1.5 GeV. Data have been collected by using the tagged and linearly polarized photon beam and the large solid angle apparatus of the GRAAL facility. Neutron data have been selected among η photoproduction events on the deuteron in the quasi-free kinematics approximation. Proton data, extracted in the same way, are within errors identical to those previously obtained on free protons at the GRAAL facility, except for a few points falling in certain energy bins. This difference is, however, well understood in terms of the Fermi motion of the nucleons in the deuteron. We take the consistency of free and quasi-free proton data as an indication that nuclear effects are negligible also for neutron data. The ETAMAID model, in which a strong coupling of the D15(1675) resonance to the η-neutron channel is introduced, can explain the proton data very well, but it cannot describe the beam asymmetry for the neutron.Ion-acoustic rogue waves in multi-ion plasmas

TGS15 tune out gyro

The drastic thickening of the barrier layer in the marginal sea off the western coast of Sumatra during the passage of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) observed during December 2015 is investigated. Before the MJO arrival, the halocline above 20 m depth was very strong and the barrier layer thickness was 5-10 m from based on R/V Mirai observations. During the MJO forcing of 13-16 December, the isothermal layer was drastically deepened from 20 m to 100 m. Meanwhile, the mixed layer deepening was lagged behind the isothermal layer deepening by 1 day, and the barrier layer underwent dramatic thickening to 60 m within 24 hours. An evaluation of the vertical salinity gradient tendency showed that the dramatic thickening of the barrier layer was due to the vertical oceanic mixing by the atmospheric MJO forcing and the vertical stretching by the oceanic downwelling coastal Kelvin wave intruding from the open ocean. One of the important factors in the drastic barrier layer thickening was concluded to be the atmospheric external forcing and the oceanic internal wave being in-phase. The downwelling oceanic Kelvin wave continuously lowered the thermocline from the middle of November to the end of December, and the salinity stratification in the vicinity of the thermocline was continuously mitigated by the vertical stretching. Under such conditions, the MJO forcing caused vertical mixing of the freshwater with the strong salinity stratification and temperature stratification near the surface. The combination of the two distinct processes caused the drastic thickening of the barrier layer, and the barrier layer thickness reached a maximum of 85 m 5 days after the MJO arrival.

The γn → ηn quasi-free cross section reveals a resonant structure at W ~ 1.675 GeV. This structure may be a manifestation of a baryon resonance. A priori its propreties, the possibly narrow width and the strong photocoupling to the neutron, look surprising. Abstract
We present the first measurement of the Σ beam asymmetry in η photoproduction on the neutron in the photon energy range from threshold to 1.5 GeV. Data have been collected by using the tagged and linearly polarized photon beam and the large solid angle apparatus of the GRAAL facility. Neutron data have been selected among η photoproduction events on the deuteron in the quasi-free kinematics approximation. Proton data, extracted in the same way, are within errors identical to those previously obtained on free protons at the GRAAL facility, except for a few points falling in certain energy bins. This difference is, however, well understood in terms of the Fermi motion of the nucleons in the deuteron. We take the consistency of free and quasi-free proton data as an indication that nuclear effects are negligible also for neutron data. The ETAMAID model, in which a strong coupling of the D15(1675) resonance to the η-neutron channel is introduced, can explain the proton data very well, but it cannot describe the beam asymmetry for the neutron.Ion-acoustic rogue waves in multi-ion plasmas

This document describes an atom interferometer gyroscope that uses spin-dependent phase shifts induced by light near a tune-out wavelength to measure absolute rotation rates. The gyroscope uses a 3-nanograting Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer with potassium atoms. It was found that measurements of the tune-out wavelength were shifted up to 213 pm from the theoretical value due to the Sagnac effect and spin-dependent vector polarizability. This large shift suggests tune-out wavelengths could enable a sensitive gyroscope. The gyroscope measures the absolute rotation rate of the laboratory in terms of the additional phase shift needed to make the measured tune-out wavelength equal to the theoretical value.

The drastic thickening of the barrier layer in the marginal sea off the western coast of Sumatra during the passage of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) observed during December 2015 is investigated. Before the MJO arrival, the halocline above 20 m depth was very strong and the barrier layer thickness was 5-10 m from based on R/V Mirai observations. During the MJO forcing of 13-16 December, the isothermal layer was drastically deepened from 20 m to 100 m. Meanwhile, the mixed layer deepening was lagged behind the isothermal layer deepening by 1 day, and the barrier layer underwent dramatic thickening to 60 m within 24 hours. An evaluation of the vertical salinity gradient tendency showed that the dramatic thickening of the barrier layer was due to the vertical oceanic mixing by the atmospheric MJO forcing and the vertical stretching by the oceanic downwelling coastal Kelvin wave intruding from the open ocean. One of the important factors in the drastic barrier layer thickening was concluded to be the atmospheric external forcing and the oceanic internal wave being in-phase. The downwelling oceanic Kelvin wave continuously lowered the thermocline from the middle of November to the end of December, and the salinity stratification in the vicinity of the thermocline was continuously mitigated by the vertical stretching. Under such conditions, the MJO forcing caused vertical mixing of the freshwater with the strong salinity stratification and temperature stratification near the surface. The combination of the two distinct processes caused the drastic thickening of the barrier layer, and the barrier layer thickness reached a maximum of 85 m 5 days after the MJO arrival.

Pre-YMC観測期間中の MJO通過時における スマトラ西岸沖 バリアレイヤー構造の急変 Moteki ms jfall161026
1. はじめに
スマトラ西岸沖では、降水量増大に対応して10月から12月にかけてバリアレイヤー(等温層内に強い塩分成層ができた結果として鉛直混合を妨げる層)が厚くなることが、過去の統計的な研究から知られている(e.g. Qiu et al. 2012, GRL)。一方で、個別のMJOと対応した観測例はまだ少なく、月平均よりも細かい時間規模におけるバリアレイヤーの発達過程は、十分に理解されていない。本研究では、2015年11月から12月に行われたPre-YMC観測キャンペーン中に捉えられたMJO通過によるバリアレイヤーの発達過程について調べた。
2. 結果
図1は、赤外輝度温度(Global-IR)と地表東西風(JRA55)の時間経度断面および観測船「みらい」の定点である南緯4度、東経102度、水深約800mのスマトラ西岸から55km沖合における鉛直時間断面である。12月11日にMJOの大規模な西風域と雲群が観測点(aの破線)を通過していることがわかる。「みらい」では、11日の降水による１次元的な日積算淡水フラックス(2×10-5kg/m2)、13日の海上風速の5-7m/sに及ぶ増大が観測され、混合層深度に比べて等温層深度が急激に深まり、40-60mのバリアレイヤーが形成された。
塩分鉛直傾度(b)は、12月11日以前に表層20mで極めて大きくなっているが、11日以降は、等温層の深まりに大きな塩分鉛直傾度が追随している。こうした水温と塩分成層の急激な変化に伴って形成されたバリアレイヤーは、11日のMJOに伴う降水による淡水フラックスよりもむしろ13日以降の海上風強化に伴う乱流エネルギー散逸率の増大(c)とよく対応している。8m/sを超える海上風速のピークは、12月13日と15日に2回見られ、同日に乱流エネルギー散逸率の増大が起こっている。1度目のピークである13日には、バリアレイヤーが厚くなっているが、15日のピークでは逆に混合層が深まってバリアレイヤーが薄くなっている。しかし、15〜16日の淡水フラックス増大後には、表層に新たな塩分鉛直傾度極大が現れた結果として混合層のみが浅くなり、バリアレイヤー厚が80mに達している。
3. まとめ
Pre-YMC中に捉えられたMJO通過時のバリアレイヤー構造の急変について調べた。MJOに伴う強い西風の風応力に伴って表層の鉛直混合が強まっていることが分かった。また、2回の西風ピークに鉛直混合が対応していることが分かった。MJO通過前に表層20mで形成されていた極めて強い塩分成層が、MJOに伴う風速強化によって鉛直拡散し、約60mに及ぶ非常に厚いバリアレイヤーが形成されたと考えられる。定点観測のため水平移流の定量化は難しいが、流速が10-30cm/sと極めて小さいこと、植物プランクトンの指標である蛍光度において10-70mに鉛直混合の特徴が確認されていることから、鉛直混合の効果がバリアレイヤー発達の主要因であったと考えられる。

ポテンシャル水温(a)は、水深50m-100mの層全体として海面水温と同様の下がり方であるが、12月13日の水深50m付近に特徴的な水温極大が見られる。塩分鉛直傾度(b)は、12月11日以前に表層20mに極めて大きくなっているが、11日以降は、等温層の深まりに大きな塩分鉛直傾度が追随している。こうした水温と塩分成層の急激な変化に伴って形成されたバリアレイヤーは、11日のMJOに伴う降水による淡水流入よりもむしろ13日以降の海上風強化に伴う流速強化(c)と乱流エネルギー散逸率の増大(d)とよく対応している。8m/sを超える海上風速のピークは、12月13日と15日に2回見られ、同日に乱流エネルギー散逸率の増大が起こり、流速強化は、14日と16日に約1日遅れで生じていることが分かる。更に、15〜16日の淡水流入後に混合層のみが浅くなった結果として、17日にはバリアレイヤー層厚が75mに達している。
3. まとめ
Pre-YMC中に捉えられたMJO通過時のバリアレイヤー構造の急変について調べた。MJOに伴う強い西風の風応力に伴って表層の鉛直混合が強まっていることが分かった。また、西風のピークに1日遅れで流速強化が見られ、2回の西風ピークに鉛直混合と流速強化が対応していることが分かった。MJO通過前に表層20mで形成されていた極めて強い塩分成層が、MJOに伴う風速強化によって鉛直拡散し、約50mに及ぶ非常に厚いバリアレイヤーが形成されたと考えられる。定点観測のため水平移流の定量化は難しいが、流速が10-30cm/sと極めて小さいこと、植物プランクトンの指標である蛍光度において10-70mに鉛直混合の特徴が確認されていることから、鉛直混合の効果がバリアレイヤー発達の主要因であったと考えられる。

When I was asked to give a companion lecture in support of ‘The Philosophy of Science’ (https://shorturl.at/4pUXz) I decided not to walk through the detail of the many methodologies in order of use. Instead, I chose to employ a long standing, and ongoing, scientific development as an exemplar. And so, I chose the ever evolving story of Thermodynamics as a scientific investigation at its best.
Conducted over a period of >200 years, Thermodynamics R&D, and application, benefitted from the highest levels of professionalism, collaboration, and technical thoroughness. New layers of application, methodology, and practice were made possible by the progressive advance of technology. In turn, this has seen measurement and modelling accuracy continually improved at a micro and macro level.
Perhaps most importantly, Thermodynamics rapidly became a primary tool in the advance of applied science/engineering/technology, spanning micro-tech, to aerospace and cosmology. I can think of no better a story to illustrate the breadth of scientific methodologies and applications at their best.

Although Artemia has been known to man for centuries, its use as a food for the culture of larval organisms apparently began only in the 1930s, when several investigators found that it made an excellent food for newly hatched fish larvae (Litvinenko et al., 2023). As aquaculture developed in the 1960s and ‘70s, the use of Artemia also became more widespread, due both to its convenience and to its nutritional value for larval organisms (Arenas-Pardo et al., 2024). The fact that Artemia dormant cysts can be stored for long periods in cans, and then used as an off-the-shelf food requiring only 24 h of incubation makes them the most convenient, least labor-intensive, live food available for aquaculture (Sorgeloos & Roubach, 2021). The nutritional value of Artemia, especially for marine organisms, is not constant, but varies both geographically and temporally. During the last decade, however, both the causes of Artemia nutritional variability and methods to improve poorquality Artemia have been identified (Loufi et al., 2024).
Brine shrimp (Artemia spp.) are used in marine aquaculture worldwide. Annually, more than 2,000 metric tons of dry cysts are used for cultivation of fish, crustacean, and shellfish larva. Brine shrimp are important to aquaculture because newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii (larvae) provide a food source for many fish fry (Mozanzadeh et al., 2021). Culture and harvesting of brine shrimp eggs represents another aspect of the aquaculture industry. Nauplii and metanauplii of Artemia, commonly known as brine shrimp, play a crucial role in aquaculture due to their nutritional value and suitability as live feed for many aquatic species, particularly in larval stages (Sorgeloos & Roubach, 2021).

It is the most common and the most harmless method for the food preservation as it does not alter the necessary micronutrients of food materials. Although irradiated food doesn’t cause any harm to the human health but still the quality assessment of food is required to provide consumers with necessary information about the food. ESR spectroscopy is the most sophisticated way to investigate the quality of the food and the free radicals induced during the processing of the food. ESR spin trapping technique is useful for the detection of highly unstable radicals in the food. The antioxidant capability of liquid food and beverages in mainly performed by spin trapping technique.

Phenomics assisted breeding in crop improvement
As the population is increasing and will reach about 9 billion upto 2050. Also due to climate change, it is difficult to meet the food requirement of such a large population. Facing the challenges presented by resource shortages, climate
change, and increasing global population, crop yield and quality need to be improved in a sustainable way over the coming decades. Genetic improvement by breeding is the best way to increase crop productivity. With the rapid progression of functional
genomics, an increasing number of crop genomes have been sequenced and dozens of genes influencing key agronomic traits have been identified. However, current genome sequence information has not been adequately exploited for understanding
the complex characteristics of multiple gene, owing to a lack of crop phenotypic data. Efficient, automatic, and accurate technologies and platforms that can capture phenotypic data that can
be linked to genomics information for crop improvement at all growth stages have become as important as genotyping. Thus,
high-throughput phenotyping has become the major bottleneck restricting crop breeding. Plant phenomics has been defined as the high-throughput, accurate acquisition and analysis of multi-dimensional phenotypes
during crop growing stages at the organism level, including the cell, tissue, organ, individual plant, plot, and field levels. With the rapid development of novel sensors, imaging technology,
and analysis methods, numerous infrastructure platforms have been developed for phenotyping.
The debris of the ‘last major merger’ is dynamically young
The Milky Way’s (MW) inner stellar halo contains an [Fe/H]-rich component with highly eccentric orbits, often referred to as the
‘last major merger.’ Hypotheses for the origin of this component include Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), where the progenitor
collided with the MW proto-disc 8–11 Gyr ago, and the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM), where the progenitor collided with the
MW disc within the last 3 Gyr. These two scenarios make different predictions about observable structure in local phase space,
because the morphology of debris depends on how long it has had to phase mix. The recently identified phase-space folds in Gaia
DR3 have positive caustic velocities, making them fundamentally different than the phase-mixed chevrons found in simulations
at late times. Roughly 20 per cent of the stars in the prograde local stellar halo are associated with the observed caustics. Based
on a simple phase-mixing model, the observed number of caustics are consistent with a merger that occurred 1–2 Gyr ago.
We also compare the observed phase-space distribution to FIRE-2 Latte simulations of GSE-like mergers, using a quantitative
measurement of phase mixing (2D causticality). The observed local phase-space distribution best matches the simulated data
1–2 Gyr after collision, and certainly not later than 3 Gyr. This is further evidence that the progenitor of the ‘last major merger’
did not collide with the MW proto-disc at early times, as is thought for the GSE, but instead collided with the MW disc within
the last few Gyr, consistent with the body of work surrounding the VRM.
