This document discusses the challenges of traditional disease surveillance methods and presents an alternative information-centric approach using various online data sources. Traditional surveillance is costly, lacks infrastructure, has poor information flow and gaps in coverage. The proposed method aggregates data from websites, social networks, NGOs and other online sources to provide near real-time global disease monitoring at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
