1) A farmer in Africa has to decide whether to sell or eat moldy grains of sorghum to get money for his family, but eating moldy grains could make them sick from toxic chemicals called aflatoxins.
2) Aflatoxins from mold can cause cancer or liver damage if levels are high, and can weaken the immune system with low doses, risking other illnesses. They can also spread to people through meat or milk from animals that ate contaminated grains.
3) Mold grows more easily on crops like maize in Africa's climate, so promoting maize increases risks, while sorghum and millet are less affected; scientists recommend farmers use these grains instead.
