The native people of the Mojave Desert used the Over Flow of Colorado River to grow
melon, corn, pumpkin, and beans.
During the Gold Rush it is estimated that more than 250,000 people crossed the Mojave to
find their fortunes In the mountains and cities of California
The Mojave desert offers many geological features such as:peaks, dry washes, salt
pans, cliffs, canyons, sand dunes, and alluvial fans.
This active dry wash demonstrates the
importance of soil moisture in the
Mojave Desert. Although dry most of
the time, streams flow repeatedly and
limit plant life in washes because of
floods and abrasion by flowing sand
and gravel. However, plants next to
the wash are larger than normal and
probably take advantage of
supplemental water from streamflow
Salt pans:a shallow basin, usually in a
desert region, containing
salt, gypsum, sodium carbonate, or
other evaporite minerals that was
deposited from an evaporated salt lake
(playa) setting(in Death
Valley, California.
Views similar to this are common throughout
the Mojave Desert region and illustrate why the
region is a geologist's dream field area!
Excellent exposure of bedrock, soils, and
alluvium amid sparse plant cover make for
easier study of geologic features (such as
fold, faults, and rock units) and geologic
processes (such as weathering, erosion and
deposition processes, and the interplay of
tectonics with these processes) This view shows
a massive alluvial fan system on the eastern
flank of the Panamint Mountains in Death
Valley, California.
5. Problems
Urban sprawl, off-highway
vehicle activity, overuse of
water resources, and
overgrazing of cattle and
sheep continue to cause
problems
In the Mojave desert 135
species of
birds, mammals, reptiles, amp
hibians and fish are included
on a special watch list for at
risk species.
Solutions
With continued commitment and
strategic conservation efforts the
Mojave desert will be restored,
protected, and preserved for the
future generations.
