Module 6 Emily Chestnut 29 April 2011
Introduction The following articles were all obtained through the Technology Review. Each article is related to technology in the classroom. The first article is about laptops, the second in regards to a technology classroom in China and the third is about hackers.
Laptops in the Classroom State of Michigan would like to provide each student in the sixth grade with a laptop for school uses inside and outside of the classroom. This is 130,000 students. This would be a great business move for computer companies but educators think it would not help problems in the classroom. “If the computer giveaway is all that happens, we should be prepared for disappointment.” http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/post.aspx?bid=293&bpid=15811
Laptops in the Classroom It is not enough to let students use technology in the classroom. The laptops will allow the educational system in Michigan to expand technology and further the knowledge of their students.
Laptops in the Classroom I think that offering students a laptop to use inside and outside of the classroom is a great idea. It allows students to be able to work on homework assignments in the classroom and at home. They can do this without having to stop for more than a few moments. They can also then use different educational websites while in the classroom. With each student having their own computer, no one has to wait on a computer to become available.
China Classroom Could your classroom look like this in a few years? A teacher in China now teaches remotely. She broadcasts her classroom lesson and calls on students who virtually interact with the teacher. “ The student's picture switches to live video and audio as he answers.” http://www.technologyreview.com/web/13622/
China Classroom Each student has a picture on the wall and when the teacher calls on them, their picture changes to a live video and audio feed so they can answer the question which was asked. This is the only evidence I found on a classroom like this but how long could it be before every classroom has similar qualities?
China Classroom When I found this article it seriously blew my mind to think that a teacher can teach without her students present. I think this makes education much less personal. I would not want to teach in a classroom where my students were not actually present. Building relationships is extremely important in education and it would be much more difficult to build those relationships through a computer screen. Also, how long could it be before classrooms are a thing of the past? Is it possible that we will all be teaching our students through Skype or a similar program one day?
Hackers in the Classroom “The principles of hacking should be taught in schools” – Peter Herzog. At Hacker HighSchool students are taught the principles of safe internet use and the fundamentals of hacking. Knowing these skills can help students from becoming a victim of hacking or identity theft. http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/post.aspx?bid=322&bpid=15162
Hackers in the Classroom Students are taught many things such as How to avoid Trojans Critical security awareness and web privacy These are all available in Spanish and English
Hackers in the Classroom I think it is very important for people to understand how to avoid becoming a victim on the internet. I do not think it is important to have such extensive information on this subject. I also think the information should not be called Hacker HighSchool because that has a negative connotation. I think having this information available to the public is a great idea though.
Conclusion These articles were all very interesting to me and I think they all raise very good ideas and concepts. The Technology Review also contains very good articles and it extremely easy to navigate.
