Barack Obama was elected the first African American president in 2008 on a platform of universal healthcare, tax increases on the wealthy, and economic change. John McCain ran against him on a platform opposing abortion and gay marriage while seeking to balance the budget. As president, Obama helped pass bank and auto industry bailouts and a major healthcare reform law. Unemployment remained high but the economy began growing again after the Great Recession. America has been involved in ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001 in response to 9/11 and Iraq's suspected weapons programs.
