TECHFUGEES MISSION
STARTED AS A MOVEMENT
• Moved by the plight of refugees in Europe, a number of technology industry people led by Mike Butcher, the Editor-at-
large of TechCrunch.com, have formed a voluntary team to create the series of non-profit Techfugees conference,
hackathons and work with a global network of collaborators.
• In its first 48 hours the Techfugees Facebook Group and Twitter account exploded. There are now over 11,000
members of Techfugees, demonstrating a huge desire amongst the tech community to get involved with this issue.
NOW A STRUCTURED NETWORK
• Local teams in 25+ countries and cities around the World including Melbourne, Freetown, San Francisco and Turkey.
• More than 100+ projects have come out of hackathons and online public consultations.
• Running events almost every two weeks - and in partnership with local players: SINGA (France), EmpowerHack (UK),
ReDi School & Silicon Alley (Germany)
• Signed a strategic partnership with Schibsted to fund its network and local events around the world

Tech-focused: we are interested in technology because it scales.
Collaboration and the non-duplication of solutions: where we can we promote the scaling of solutions that
already exist. Techfugees is not involved in creating or marketing apps directly to refugees, but Techfugees
will promote and push tech solutions as a way of keeping technology in the global conversation about
refugee issues.
Coordinate and curate – we apply some due diligence process before we connect projects with NGO
challenges, partners, sponsors, and experts.
Independent and non-political: it does not support any political agenda or finance any political activism.
