Abstract:
As a chain is as strong as its weakest element, so are the efficiency, flexibility, and
robustness of a mobile network, which relies on a range of different functional
elements and mechanisms. Indeed, the mobile network architecture needs
particular attention when discussing the evolution of 3GPP EPS because it is the
architecture that integrates the many different future technologies into one
mobile network. This article discusses 3GPP EPS mobile network evolution as a
whole, analyzing specific architecture properties that are critical in future 3GPP
EPS releases. In particular, this article discusses the evolution toward a "network
of functions," network slicing, and software-defined mobile network control,
management, and orchestration. Furthermore, the roadmap for the future
evolution of 3GPP EPS and its technology components is detailed and relevant
standards defining organizations are listed.

This document summarizes a graduation project on simulating and implementing hardware for a 5G communication system. 5G is expected to be deployed after 2020 and will allow for higher data rates, lower complexity and greater security than previous generations. Abstract— Self-Organizing Networks (SON) is a collection of functions to the radio and network components to interact among themselves to configure, tune, optimize and healing of cellular system in real time. It is considered to be a necessity in future mobile networks and operations, due to the increased cost pressure and minimizing trend of human intervention. This paper describes scope, architecture of reference model, evaluations on the use of some of the most important SON components. We also included the application of a revolutionary algorithm; genetic algorithm. The application of this algorithm in telecommunication network optimization has presented and shown with the effective choice of some important parameter values involved in optimization and the implementation strategies. Nowadays mobile networks are getting more complex to configure, optimize and maintain. SON functions will perform to give cost savings and performance benefits from the very beginning of a network deployment to its life-cycle.

This paper provides evolution of the mobile network architecture in Software Defined Networking (SDN) and virtualization context and realizes it through the use of distribution of gateway function approach. Key improvements with proposed approach are to support efficient mobility management in heterogeneous access environments, remove the chains of IP preservation and optimal data path management according to application needs. The current Evolved Packet Core (EPC) 4th generation (4G) mobile network architecture features complicated control plane protocols and requires expensive equipment. Data delivery in the mobile packet core is performed based on a centralized mobility anchor between eNode B (eNB) elements and the network gateways. The mobility anchor is performed based on General Packet Radio Service tunnelling protocol (GTP), which has numerous drawbacks, including high tunnelling overhead and suboptimal routing between mobile devices on the same network. To address these challenges, here we describe new mobile core architecture for future mobile networks. The proposed scheme is based on IP encapsulated within IP (IP-in-IP) for mobility management and data delivery. In this scheme, the core network functions via layer 3 switching (L3S), and data delivery is implemented based on IP-in-IP routing, thus eliminating the GTP tunnelling protocol. For handover between eNB elements located near to one another, we propose the creation of a tunnel that maintains data delivery to mobile devices until the new eNB element updates the route with the gateway, which prevents data packet loss during handover. For this, we propose Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) tunnelling protocol. We describe the results of numerical analyses and simulation results showing that the proposed network core architecture provides superior performance compared with the current 4G architecture in terms of handover delay, tunnelling overhead and total transmission delay.

Cellular users of today have an insatiable appetite for bandwidth and data. Data-intensive applications, such as video on demand, online gaming and video conferencing, have gained prominence. This, coupled with recent innovations in the mobile network such as LTE/4G, poses a unique challenge to network operators in how to extract the most value from their deployments while reducing their Total Cost of Operations(TCO). To this end, a number of enhancements have been proposed to the “conventional” LTE mobile network. Most of these recognize the monolithic and non-elastic nature of the mobile backend and propose complimenting core functionality with concepts borrowed from Software Defined Networking (SDN). In this paper, we will attempt to explore some existing options within the LTE standard to address traffic challenges. We then survey some SDN-enabled alternatives and comment on their merits and drawbacks.

The escalating demand for swift and dependable wireless internet access has spurred the development of various protocols within 802.11 WLANs. Among them, the 802.11ac protocols have gained widespread acceptance over the past few years, offering enhanced data transfer rates compared to the 802.11n standard. However, the persistent congestion of wireless IoT devices, particularly in densely populated areas, remains a significant challenge. To tackle this issue, IEEE 802.11 has advanced IEEE 802.11ax as the successor to 802.11ac, introducing critical enhancements at the PHY/MAC layers to improve throughput in dense scenarios. Additionally, modelling and simulating these protocols are vital for WLAN researchers and designers to anticipate link characteristics effectively, fostering high-performance WLAN design. The need for such tools led to the creation of diverse network simulation programs, and NS-2 is widely accepted as an open-source program that has achieved remarkable success in research. In this paper, we focus on various connection properties of 802.11ax WLANs through NS-3 simulations, including MCSs, bonded channels, GI, data encoding, antennas, data rates, link distance, Tx/Rx power, gain, and payload size. We also compare their performance against 802.11ac, which demonstrates that NS-3 accurately supports most 802.11ax capabilities and outperforms 802.11ac in various scenarios.

A Flexible Network Architecture for 5G Systems

In this paper, we define a flexible, adaptable, and programmable architecture for 5Gmobile networks, taking into consideration the requirements, KPIs, and the current gaps in the literature, based on three design fundamentals: (i) split of user and control plane, (ii) service-based architecturewithin the core network (in line with recent industry and standard consensus), and (iii) fully flexible support of E2E slicing via per-domain and cross-domain optimisation, devising inter-slice control and management functions, and refining the behavioural models via experiment-driven optimisation.The proposed architecture model further facilitates the realisation of slices providing specific functionality, such as network resilience, security functions, and network elasticity. The proposed architecture consists of four different layers identified as network layer, controller layer, management and orchestration layer, and service layer. A key contribution of this paper is the definition of the role of each layer, the relationship between layers, and the identification of the required internal modules within each of the layers. In particular, the proposed architecture extends the reference architectures proposed in the Standards Developing Organisations like 3GPP and ETSI, by building on these while addressing several gaps identified within the corresponding baseline models. We additionally present findings, the design guidelines, and evaluation studies on a selected set of key concepts identified to enable flexible cloudification of the protocol stack, adaptive network slicing, and inter-slice control and management.

Besides, the performance for an enterprise scenario proposed by the IEEE 802.11ax study group is evaluated when several hosts are simultaneously creating traffic with their associated APs.
