Google Launches Prepaid Card for Your Wallet
Google has launched a prepaid debit card for its Wallet users to
make real-world payments and cash withdrawals from their account.
The Card can be used anywhere where MasterCard is accepted but is
only currently available in the US. However, there is a 2.9% fee
charged when moving money from debit or credit cards to Google
Wallet, so some users may see this as a major disadvantage.
Google’s selling point compared to banks is still that you can make
peer-to-peer payments to anyone using Gmail, which is many
people, with any money going straight into Google Wallet.
Instagram comes to Windows Phone 8 – Without In-app Camera
The photo sharing app Instagram, has finally been launched onto
the Windows Store, three years after it was launched on iOS. The
official app has all the functionality you’d expect to see, however it
has two exceptions: the ability to upload and share videos, and an
in-app camera. It is still possible to take photos which can be
shared via Instagram, but this is achieved by pushing users out of
the app itself and into the OS’s native camera app. The argument is
that these native apps take advantage of the powerful cameras
available on devices like the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Are You Ready for Your Smartphone to be Smarter Than You?
By 2017, Gartner reports, our smartphones will be entirely
smarter than we are. They predict that smartphones will be able
to predict a consumer’s next move, their next purchase and
interpret actions based on what it knows. “Smartphones are
becoming smarter, and will be smarter than you by 2017,” says
Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “If there is
heavy traffic, it will wake you up early for a meeting with your
boss, or simply send an apology if it is a meeting with your
colleague. The smartphone will gather contextual information
from its calendar, its sensors, the user’s location and personal
data.”

Near field communication is a short-range, low power wireless link
evolved from radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology that
can transfer small amounts of data between two devices held a few
centimeters from each other. Both EE and Vodafone are launching
this service where customers can pay using their mobile phones. EE
has created an app they are called the Tap Wallet in conjunction
with MasterCard where customers can download and pay for items
up to £20. Whereas Vodafone have created the Vodafone Wallet in
conjunction with Visa that utilizes the same service.
Proximity marketing, as the term suggests, implies distributing
local advertising content to users, via wireless channels, such as
mobile devices. Using three different types of transmissions via
Bluetooth, NFC and SMS. One company that has used this is Krispy
Kreme, which interestingly enough, was the company’s first
advertising campaign in the newly entered U.K. market. Large
billboard calls-to-action were used to drive brand awareness and
customer loyalty via Bluetooth downloads, and was a huge success
in the end. During the 15-day campaign, Krispy Kreme generated
48,154 downloads total. Another company to use this strategy is
Pot Noodle, they placed large calls to actions around London and
the campaign pushed downloads of a free branded game and
created a viral effect in the process. During the four week
campaign, Pot Noodle received just over 95,000 downloads total
