THE WORLD OF SEPHORA
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
SEPHORA
INTRODUCTION
THE WORLD OF SEPHORA
ABOUT
Sephora was founded in 1970 in France, as “Shop 8” by Dominique Mandonnaud. In 1993, he created the store’s unique
name by blending the Biblical name of Zipporah (Moses’ beautiful wife) with the ancient Greek term for “pretty,” sephos.
Today, Sephora is not only the leading chain of perfume and cosmetics stores in France, it’s a powerful beauty presence
in 24 other countries. In the United States and Canada, there are over 280 Sephora stores and over 270 stores inside
JCPenny. Sephora’s unique, open-sell environment features over 200 classic and emerging brands across a broad range
of product categories including skincare, cosmetics, fragrance, bath & body, smilecare, and haircare, in addition to
Sephora’s own private label.
Sephora is also the world’s top beauty website and recognized as a leading e-brand through mobile and social media
initiatives including a Facebook page, mobile site, and iphone app.
Owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), the world’s leading luxury goods group, Sephora is highly regarded
as a beauty expert, thanks to its unparalleled assortment of prestige products, unbiased advice from Sephora Experts,
interactive shopping environment, and constant innovation.
DEVELOPMENT
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
TARGET PARTICIPANTS: MENTORS & MENTEES
The target mentor participants are members of the leadership team currently employed in Sephora retail locations.
Eligible mentors must desire a upper-level management position in order to participate. The target mentee participants
are current cast members (employees) that have been with the company for at least 6 months, and who are striving to
become part of the leadership team in their store.
SELECTION OF MENTORS & MENTEES
When the program was announced in Fall 2011, Sephora Oakridge #0144, was asked to be the pilot site for this new
idea. The store’s Director (manager) and Specialist (assistant manager) informed their seasoned cast members (staff)
about the program along with the opportunities/benefits of participation. Each eligible and interested cast member was
given a “Pre-evaluation” form which aided in the selection process. They also signed an attendance agreement to ensure
full cast participation and to signify understanding of Sephora’s expectations. Cast members were given one month to
turn in their forms.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS & BENEFITS
Sephora believes in the growth and promotion of their employees. When it is rolled out, the mentorship program will
give mentees and mentors the tools that they need to fasttrack the promotional ladder. Furthermore, it will create more
cohesion within the Sephora stores and less educational gaps between job titles. The mentors will benefit by learning
more about themselves through coaching the mentees, tracking their progression and receiving results. The mentors will
learn that each of them has unique leadership styles that will impact their mentees differently. The mentees will benefit
from the program by learning the difference between management and leadership, the many styles of leadership, how
to be emotionally intelligent, and how to overcome their personal struggles. To give the mentees a well-rounded learning
experience, groups in rotation will be set up to ensure each mentee receives training from different types of leaders, to
grow to their full potential.
