MULTIMODAL TRAFFIC
GROWTH AND POTENTIAL
PREPARED BY :
R. NILAVENI REDDY
CONTEXT OF GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT
• US leads international trade ---- Panama canal
restricts large size ships ---- congestion with more
waiting time. Transhipment hubs expected.
• European freight traffic increased due to economic
growth. But road freight > other inter modal systems.
• No connectivity between coastal shipping and inland
waterways in Europe.
• Emergence of China as a major trading partner of US
& EU.
TRENDS IN CONTAINER TRAFFIC IN INDIA
ISO CONTAINERS
Intermodal containers are used for the intermodal transport of freight. They are
manufactured according to specifications from ISO and are suitable for multiple
transportation methods such as truck, rail, or ship.
• CONCOR moved 1716 thousand TEUs of ISO/EXIM containers out of 6069
thousand TEUs of container traffic.
• CONCOR’s share of ISO containers represents only 28 % of containers that were
transported inland either after arrival or before dispatch overseas.
DSO CONTAINERS
• Domestic Division of CONCOR was set up in 1997: consolidation and door-
to-door service.
• 41 container depots dealing with Exim traffic.
• Domestic container traffic was only 23 % of ISO traffic of CONCOR in 2006-
07.
RAIL AND ROAD SHARES OF CONTAINER
TRAFFIC
ISO CONTAINER
CONCOR’s share of 28 % of
containers handled at ports
represents mainly rail share,
the remaining over 70 %
containers represent short or
long distance road transport,
for consignees within the
hinterland and more distant
locations.
DSO CONTAINER
According to 2007-08 railway
data 6.4 thousand tonnes
(23.44%) of container freight
was comprised of DSO
containers.
Road share was negligible.
ORIGIN DESTINATION FLOWS OF RAIL
CONTAINER DATA
ISO CONTAINERS
• ICDs of northern, western,
central regions to the west
coast ports of JNPT, Mundra &
Pipavav.
• Between Whitefield and
Chennai.
• Sanatnagar to Dronagiri &
JNPT to Sanatnagar.
• Between Tughlakabad and
Tondiarpet.
DSO CONTAINERS
• North-south movement
between Tughlakabad and
Tondiarpet, Whitefield,
Sanatnagar, Turbhe APM
Complex (near Bombay), and
Vishakapatnam.
• Movement from west to east
from Khodiyar and Turbhe
Complex to Shalimar, and from
Alipur to TKD.
• Movement between
Sanatnagar and Tondiarpet in
the south and the Shalimar in
the east.
FUTURE PROJECTIONS OF CONTAINERS
TRAFFIC IN INDIA
Projections for Container Traffic in Exim cargo
• Development of Mundra & Pipavav ports ---- stiff competition to JNPT
• Growth is expected to be the most for Cochin (Vallarpadam) and
Tuticorin
• Ports in the eastern sector are expected to grow more slowly
• Vizag port is expected to show high growth on the east coast
Projections of Container Traffic in Domestic Cargo
• Central Statistical Organisation reports data of 350 commodities
production to be converted into measurable tonnage data & estimated
containers required.
(FLOW CHART )
DEVELOPING POTENTIAL OF MMT
IN INDIA
• Developing ports to handle larger shipping vessels
• Developing hub & feeder operations at ports & along
coast
• Facilitating containerisation of freight traffic at ICDs &
CFSs
• Improved Hinterland connectively of ports &
construction of high speed dedicated rail freight
corridors.
• Development of MM logistics Parks
• Development of Coastal Shipping & Inland Waterways
• MMT of Goods Act & Customs Procedures
• Measures for Domestic Containerisation
