Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is used to extract occluded textual content from between the pages of a stacked paper sample. The technique uses time resolution to isolate reflections from each paper layer and a time-gated spectral analysis to enhance contrast of the textual content on each layer. This allows extraction of characters written on each of nine paper pages packed together, overcoming issues of low signal-to-noise ratio, contrast between content and layers, and occlusion from upper layers. The method provides over an order of magnitude better signal contrast than conventional amplitude mapping and could enable non-destructive inspection of layered structures.
