MISSOURI COMPROMISE OF 1820
By Shelby Albright
WHAT WAS THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE?
 An agreement about slavery laws in the expansion
    of new states.
 Missouri became a slave state.
 Maine was free.
 Boundaries of slavery were limited to the same
latitude as the southern boundary of Missouri.

                     19th Century Maine

                 19th Century Missouri
EVENTS THAT MADE IT NECESSARY
 In 1818, less
    than 45% of
    seats in the
    House of
    Representatives
    were Southern
    states.
 There were many
    arguments on
    whether to make
    new states slave
    states or not.
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT?

 This was important because there were and
even number of slave states, and an even
number of free states in the House of
  Representatives.
 To define which states were slave states and
  which were not.
 This way, there were 11 slave states, and 11
  free states
