2. Makeup
There is very little makeup
in this scene however there
is a bit of eyeliner and a
scar to emphasize the
injured and unwell theme
of the hospital. The eyeliner
is done in a way so that
Sarah looks sleepless and
almost dead as the area
around her eyes is
extremely dark. Her hair is
also messy because she just
woke up after a car crash
and it is straight at the top
to make Sarah’s face look
thin and terrified.
3. Lighting and colour
The lighting in the hospital is
dim and a few meters turn into
complete darkness. This is done
so Sarah looks isolated hence
why there are no people
around her. The colour is green
which is done using a filter and
this is done to create a
paranormal and unreal theme
using the hospital corridors.
The corners of the shot are also
shaded to represent that there
is nowhere in particular to look
besides the endless straight line
in which Sarah is running.
4. Setting and props
The setting is in a hospital and in this
particular scene, a hospital bed. The
props used are breathing tubes, a
bed, a computer and random wires.
These props are used to show that
Sarah is on life support after her
accident and suggests she was in a
short coma or just knocked out. The
breathing tubes are significant
because when Sarah pulls them off, it
shows that she has recovered from
the accident and creates an ironic
effect when the audience finds out
she has not mentally recovered from
it and she has only survived.
5. Facial expressions and body language
Sarah’s facial expressions show
how she slowly gets increasingly
terrified throughout the hospital
part of the movie. The facial
expression is wide eyed as though
she just saw a ghost however at
the end of the scene, when she
returns to reality, she becomes
deeply upset and cries her eyes
out while clutching her friend. This
is obvious by her facial expression
in the picture and shows how she
is affected by Jessica’s death.
6. Sound
This setting has very little sound as it lacks background
music and the hospital scent is very quiet. There are
obviously the sounds of Sarah shifting in her bed as she
removes the life support and there is a significant beep
of the pulse reader as she pulls it off which tells the
audience it is all over even as the film has only just
begun. As she suffers from her hallucination, she cries
out with every breath in fear and finally at the end of
the hospital setting, she is crying. Besides this, there
isn’t any other sound due to the producers trying to
make the film as realistic as possible.
