Mary anointed Jesus' feet with expensive perfume, angering Judas who said it should have been sold to help the poor. Jesus said Mary was preparing him for burial and the poor would always be around, but Jesus would not. When people heard Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead, they flocked to see him and Lazarus, prompting the priests to plot to kill Lazarus as well due to his role in many believing in Jesus.

My deepest desire and intent for making this article is to equip the church (God’s flock) with basic apologetics. I hope that this will be a tool for pre-evangelism with the uninformed and for post-evangelism with the misinformed. God forbid that this will be used as a weapon for ungodly debates and futile discussions. Yes! Doctrine and Theology matter, but Relationships matter, as well. Let’s start speaking the Truth in love and continue to love speaking the Truth! Jesus, be exalted in our minds and hearts!

was the Cross just a second alternative that did bring Spiritual

_MINISTRY_Come Let Us Adore Him #4_Mary & JosephRohan Dredge
Matthew’s gospel focuses on the role of Joseph in the advent story whilst Luke tends to lean towards the experiences and role that Mary played. Put the two together and you see that God chooses unremarkable people to do impossible things.
The danger here is that we romanticise the Christmas story. It’s really a story of trust, sacrifice, perseverance and a whole lot of courage in the fact that when God calls you, even in the midst of challenge, he is present to perform his purpose.
Joseph, in my opinion, is an unsung hero of Scripture. What a mighty and magnificent man. Choosing to obey God, honour Mary and Father Jesus at what would have amounted to significant personal cost. A picture of true biblical manhood.
The other lessons I would invite you to consider is what it means to be called and used by God for significant purposes. You and I are as much candidates for the purposes of God as Mary and Joseph. I trust you are open and willing to be invited into His grand plan and story.
Make it a great completion to 2013. See you in 2014.
_MINISTRY_Come Let Us Adore Him #3_HerodRohan Dredge
Every story has an enemy. Every unfolding epic has a force to be reckoned with that the characters need to push back against, dig deep for resources they didn’t know they had and (ultimately) triumph.
At least that’s the way the story arc goes!
_MINISTRY_Come Let Us Adore Him #2 The Wise MenRohan Dredge
In week 2 of our Come Let Us Adore Him series, Pastor Glen Cox spoke about this part of the Christmas story which is rich in content and meaning.
It reminds us all of one of the most incredible pilgrimages ever undertaken by mankind. Glen uses the example of a personal pilgrimage to draw a comparison and bring context to the need in every one of us to pursue those aspects of life that are important to us. This message dispels many common myths about the journey that these men took to discover the 'King of the Jews' some 2000 years ago.
This year @discoverychurch we are “meeting the people who met Jesus"
These wise men were not kings and were waiting for the great day when the star would shine from the east.
They knew the day was coming and once identified, had enough faith to follow this star. When you think about it, the first people to worship the young man Jesus, wasn't the Jewish nation, whose capital was only 10 km away but a group of gentile astrologers from ancient Persia or Babylon who travelled for months for this very brief encounter. Amazing!
One thing we know for sure is once you meet the person of Jesus, you can never go back the way you came. Your life is changed forever!

_MINISTRY_Come Let Us Adore Him #1 Meet The ShepherdsRohan Dredge
The Christmas story amazes me. And I have had it loud and clear since I was 10 years old. Being able to look with fresh eyes at a profound entry to earth is a task I delight in.
This year @discoverychurch we are “meeting the people who met Jesus”
This week, we meet the most unlikely characters to be introduced to Jesus. Shepherds. The second lowest rung on the social scale are the first port of call for the announcement of the birth of Christ.
I speak with many people who don’t think “Jesus is for them” I think the story of the Shepherds can radically change that perspective.
Remember, the announcement was made for you and the invitation includes you.
Merry Christmas

_MINISTRY_So You Said I Do #5_True MarriageRohan Dredge
In our final week of So You Said I Do, we explore what Christian marriage CAN BE. Too often we look at what isn’t happening in life and love rather than be reminded and excited about what’s possible.
This week my wife Megan shared the third message in our series So You Said I Do. She shared on seasons.
In our everyday life, seasons come and seasons go. The same is true in marriage. The marriage relationship experiences seasons coming and seasons going and great marriages recognise and respond to the changing seasons.
As Jim Rohn so beautifully explained it - the same wind blows on us all: the wind of economic uncertainty, the wind of relationship challenge, the wind of financial pressure. The difference in the destination is simply this: how you set your sail. You can't change the way the wind blows but you can change the set of your marriage sail.
Every season has a purpose, even if you can't see it or language it, and no season is wasted. Great marriages find the purpose in every season and continue to persevere and push through to see the results they desire.
Make your marriage count by learning how to recognise and respond to the changing seasons.

_MINISTRY_So You Said I Do #2_Responsibility & FormationRohan Dredge
As we build on the So You Said I Do Marriage series we deep dive
into the area that I think can change a marriage most quickly and
most noticeably. No, it’s not “what your partner needs to hear....” It
is about you and making a choice to take full personal
responsibility for our attitudes and actions.
The bible begins and ends with a perfect marriage. That’s the last of
them. My marriage, your marriage and all our relationships are in
some way broken. Brokenness, as this message outlines, can
adversely affect a marriage. When we live out of smallness of spirit,
fear and insecurity, we are tempted to deny God the role and pleasure of
being our all in all. We then learn unresourceful and unhelpful
behaviours that simply do not serve and bring life to our Marriage.
There is hope. Take full responsibility for your own attitudes and
actions. Do the work to be validated personally. Get you insides
right, so to speak. Bring your whole (and healing) self back to your
marriage, family and relationships to serve and invest in their
future.
Do the personal work, it’s worth it.

_MINISTRY_So You Said I Do #1_Family Of OriginRohan Dredge
In this opening message for our new Series “So You Said I Do” we explore the importance and significance of family of origin. The environment we grew up in, our relationship with our parents and siblings how information is shared and conflict experienced.
Family of Origin can manifest itself in a number of ways, some helpful, some funny and some unhelpful. Being aware of your family of Origin as well its impact on your current family situation is essential to building a healthy family system. It can be sorted out.
Drawing on the teaching in Genesis 2 and Matthew 19 this message encourages the hearer to truly leave their original family, join (or cleave the KJV of the bible says) to their new family and unite together in becoming one.
The next best step in creating a family that you love to be part of is to delight in your family and marriage. In short…. Stay Amazed.
Enjoy the journey towards a marriage that loves and lasts.
_MINISTRY_ Vertical #2_The Sacrifice of PraiseRohan Dredge
In this message, Creative Pastor Greg Attwells unpacks our New Covenant responsibility as priests to minister the Lord in praise. The sacrifice of praise is a response to the sacrifice of Jesus and how we lead ourselves into the reality of his Kingdom
The posture of praise brings God's perspective into full view. To begin our new series Vertical, guest Andrew Menzies highlights how praise brings a right perspective of god, a right perspective of ministry and a right perspective for our future.
_MINISTRY_Vertical #5_The Fruit of PraiseRohan Dredge
When we understand the basics of anything, we can build on them and do them well. In this message, Rohan explores the foundational factors that lead us to a positive place of praise. When we lift up our eyes, soul, voice and hands, with perspective, conviction, declaration and surrender; we position ourselves for a far greater understanding of God and how we can praise Him: Because how we praise follows who praise.
_MINISTRY_Vertical #4_The Pathway of PraiseRohan Dredge
What do we do that's important before we get to the thing that's important? In this message, Rohan teaches how we can prepare to praise by reflecting on our walk, our words and our witness and how they might be barriers to our own self-leadership and in doing so, experience the promise of Psalm 15 of "never being shaken" from God's presence.
_MINISTRY_Vertical #3_The Profile of PraiseRohan Dredge
In this message, Rohan communicates the focus and fruit of praise. He teaches that when we focus on God, with an attitude of exaltation and lean into the praise experience through self-leadership, we can experience dominion.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
5. John20:30-31NLT
30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous
signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But
these are written so that you may continue to believe that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing
in him you will have life by the power of his name.
6. Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in
Bethany, the home of Lazarus — the man he had raised from the
dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honour. Martha served, and
Lazarus was among those who ate with him. 3 Then Mary took a
twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard,
and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The
house was filled with the fragrance. 4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple
who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s
wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6
Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in
charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.
John12:1-11NLT
7. 7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my
burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not
always have me.” 9 When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they
flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised
from the dead. 10 Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too,
11 for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted
them and believed in Jesus.
John12:1-11NLT
10. John11:55-57NLT
55 It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and
many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several
days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before
Passover began. 56 They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood
around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think?
He won’t come for Passover, will he?” 57 Meanwhile, the leading
priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus
must report it immediately so they could arrest him.
14. Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in
Bethany, the home of Lazarus — the man he had raised from the
dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honour. Martha served, and
Lazarus was among those who ate with him.

16. Nard (sometimes called "spikenard") comes from the spikenard plant
(Nardostachys jatamansi), native to India's eastern Himalayas, growing from
10,000 to 16,000 feet elevation (3,000 to 5,000 meters). The rhizomes or
roots are crushed and distilled into an intensely aromatic, amber-colored
essential oil that was a favourite perfume in antiquity. The best spikenard was
imported from India in sealed alabaster containers.[229] It was very
expensive because of the tedious extraction process as well as the cost of
importing it along extensive caravan routes leading west to the
Mediterranean. In verse 5, Judas calculates its value as 300 denarii, which, at
the wage of about a denarius per day, was nearly one year's wages -- a very
expensive perfume indeed! This perfume might be worth $30,000 to
$50,000 USD in today's currency!
John includes a distinctive detail -- also mentioned in 11:2 -- that marked this
event as quite intimate, indeed, shocking. Respectable women didn't go out
in public with their hair down -- that was the mark of a loose woman. But
Mary had let down her hair and was drying excess perfume from Jesus' feet
with her hair!
DNS
17. 3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made
from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his
feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.
John12:3-4NLT
18. On August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines flight 225 crashed just after taking off
from the Detroit airport, killing 155 people. One survived: a four-year-old
from Tempe, Arizona, named Cecelia.
News accounts say when rescuers found Cecelia they did not believe she had
been on the plane. Investigators first assumed Cecelia had been a passenger
in one of the cars on the highway onto which the airliner crashed. But when
the passenger register for the flight was checked, there was Cecelia's name.
Cecelia survived because, even as the plane was falling, Cecelia's mother,
Paula Chican, unbuckled her own seat belt, got down on her knees in front of
her daughter, wrapped her arms and body around Cecelia, and then would
not let her go.
Nothing could separate that child from her parent's love—neither tragedy nor
disaster, neither the fall nor the flames that followed, neither height nor
depth, neither life nor death. Such is the love of our Saviour for us. He left
heaven, lowered himself to us, and covered us with the sacrifice of his own
body to save us.

24. In 1967, a student named Libby attended with her boyfriend, Tom.
During the final commitment evening, both submitted their lives to
the Lord. For 30 years, Tom and Libby Little served in Afghanistan,
providing vision care to the people of Kabul throughout seemingly
endless wars and conflict. In August 2010, shortly after conducting a
two-week medical camp in a remote valley of northwestern
Afghanistan, Tom and his medical team were ambushed and killed.
Upon receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her husband,
Libby said, "Although Tom was killed in 2010, he had already
surrendered his life to God's good purposes way back in 1967." For
four decades, Tom had submitted himself to his divine master. So in
one sense, Tom Little had already died in Christ prior to 1967, and he
would always live through Christ even though he was ambushed and
killed in Afghanistan.
