Procrastination is defined as delaying important tasks to a later date. It can cause stress, guilt, depression, and failure. Many people, especially students, procrastinate due to laziness, lack of motivation or focus, or not knowing where to start. Over 20% of the population procrastinates and the percentage is rising. Traits of procrastinators include being regularly late, avoiding decisions, and not liking to be depended on. The limbic system causes people to give into immediate gratification rather than delaying rewards. Strategies to stop procrastinating include doing the worst tasks first, avoiding interruptions, stepping out of comfort zones, and following through to completion.
