Research Overview about the Multimedia Communications Lab (KOM) - Technische Universität Darmstadt - Germany
Research areas towards Adaptive Seamless Multimedia Communications are: Knowledge & Educational Technologies, Multimedia Technologies & Serious Games, Mobile Systems & Sensor Networks, Self-organizing Systems & Overlay Communications, Service-oriented Computing
The main idea of this strategy is based on the essential textbook of pedagogy Orbis sensualium pictus which was written according to Komenský’s belief that the school should be a game. It was first published in Nürnberg in 1658. He believed, contrary to the teaching practices at the time, that the pupils should be able to teach learned matter not only to renounce mechanically but to understand what they were learning. He, therefore, provided a textbook with some illustrations so that it would be captivating for the children. It was about biology (living and inanimate nature), theology and man, something that can now be called the foundations of social sciences.
Modern times have brought new opportunities to implement this strategy.
For example, using simple computer games for practicing and verifying the student’s knowledge. During the lecture, several computer games created for this purpose will be presented. Games are primarily designed to teach automation and programming in MATLAB software at university.
They are created in the way that the data about the matter are read from an external file. This file is enough to be edited and used for any subject of the study program. In the lecture, there will also be introduced several electronic aids facilitating the teaching of work with graphics programs and programs in the office at secondary schools in the Czech Republic. All these games and utilities were rated by students using questionnaires after the completion of the courses, and these results will be presented, too.

Augmented Reality (AR) is on the way to establishing itself in business and teaching once more. However, there is a lack of uniform guidelines or even standards both in the creation of teaching materials and in the use of AR in teaching. In addition, the industry needs enough well-trained specialists who can implement the established AR concepts, making a transfer from university to industry necessary. Therefore, in this talk we address both challenges in teaching with AR and the special needs of teaching about AR.
As teaching with AR will surely advance human performance and also brings in new perspectives with the communication, coordination and collaboration of AR in supporting human performance. As computer scientists, we have a European, interdisciplinary and application-oriented perspective, as our experience comes from several funded European projects in these areas. We also incorporate new incentives into teaching contexts in our framework, such as gamification, learning analytics and experience capturing. In addition, we refer to international standardization efforts such as IEEE ARLEM.
Teaching about AR adopts a multi-perspective view. First, there is scientific and technological basic knowledge helping to understand the underlying physical and technical principles. Second, there is engineering and design knowledge to master the creation, fabrication, and utilization of AR in many ways. Third, there is the necessary pedagogical knowledge to transform these complex settings in manageable teaching scenarios and processes, e.g. for higher education curricula.
Here, teaching AR can learn from traditions of science and engineering education as well as from more recent knowledge about computer science education. Examples from recent and on-going European projects will illustrate the argumentation.

Design of an IT Capstone Subject - Cloud RoboticsITIIIndustries
This paper describes the curriculum of the three year IT undergraduate program at La Trobe University, and the faculty requirements in designing a capstone subject, followed by the ACM’s recommended IT curriculum covering the five pillars of the IT discipline. Cloud robotics, a broad multidisciplinary research area, requiring expertise in all five pillars with mechatronics, is an ideal candidate to offer capstone experiences to IT students. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a long term master project in developing a cloud robotics testbed, with many capstone sub-projects spanning across the five IT pillars, to meet the objectives of capstone experience. This paper also describes the design and implementation of the testbed, and proposes potential capstone projects for students with different interests.
Integration of an e-learning Platform and a Remote Laboratory for the Experim...Federico Lerro
Nowadays, it is more common to use both
systems, a Learning Management System (LMS) and a
remote laboratory, independently. However, we understand
it is highly convenient for the students to have access and
perform real experimental practices in remote laboratories
from a LMS. This integration of both educational resources
constitutes one objective of a project developed by a joint
venture company-university: a technology company (“educativa”)
and a public university (UNR). The project is
based on the addition to the “Virtual Campus LMS”,
developed by “e-ducativa”, of a function that allows the
access and control, via Internet, to the “Remote Laboratory
of Electronic Physics” located in the university
headquarters. Technology is basically a self-communication
protocol that allows exchanging data in a standardized way
between the LMS software and the device control connected
to the remote equipment. The project includes the
implementation of an interface that allows the users of the elearning
platform to have access to it and to future
developments of remote laboratories. In this paper the
authors describe the technical implementation of the project
and provide educational criteria in order to integrate the
new development into the electronic engineering
curriculum.

Genome-wide transcription profiling is a powerful technique in studying disease susceptible footprints. Moreover, when applied to disease tissue it may reveal quantitative and qualitative alterations in gene expression that give information on the context or underlying basis for the disease and may provide a new diagnostic approach. However, the data obtained from high-density microarrays is highly complex and poses considerable challenges in data mining. Past researches prove that neuro diseases damage the brain network interaction, protein- protein interaction and gene-gene interaction. A number of neurological research paper also analyze the relationship among damaged part. Analysis of gene-gene interaction network drawn by using state-of-the-art gene database of Alzheimer’s patient can conclude a lot of information. In this paper we used gene dataset affected with Alzheimer’s disease and normal patient’s dataset from NCBI databank. After proper processing the .CEL affymetrix data using RMA, we use the processed data to find gene interaction outputs. Then we filter the output files using probe set filtering attributes p-value and fold count and draw a gene-gene interaction network. Then we analyze the interaction network using GeneMania software.
20090327 Software Engineering -- What's in it for me?Arian Zwegers
Presentation about the opportunities for funding in Software and Services, esp in the FP7 ICT Work Programme, ITEA2, and Artemis, for the CSMR conference, Kaiserslautern (Germany), 27 March 2009
A key initiative of Europe is to accelerate the deployment of Data Spaces in different domains. Manufacturing Data Spaces are among the top 9 priorities set by the EC.
Data sharing among manufacturing companies and with (service) providers will be increasing in the near future, demonstrating how sharing industrial data improves company operations. Both the discrete manufacturing and process industry are impacted by such a transformation.
Consequently, the priority for manufacturing stakeholders will be to develop collaborative services based on a trusted and common framework for sharing and exchanging data and models multilaterally to overcome the interoperability challenge and implement next generation autonomous cross-enterprise industrial operations.
Currently approaches to Digital Manufacturing Platforms (DMP) and Industrial Data Platforms (IDP) do lack the ability to consistently share data across organisations at scale. In fact, it is already acknowledged that peer-to-peer data sharing, especially when involving SMEs, will not scale to unveil high-quality data sharing for manufacturing value set above.
The FIWARE Smart Industry Mission Support Committee (SIMSC) is playing a major role in this twin and green transition, facilitating the definition and adoption of common protocol and data models, as well as the spreading of enabling technologies such as Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence. The session will drive you through the context analysis, the needs and benefits, the technologies adoption in relevant use cases and the offering of Testing and Experimental Facilities in several industrial domains.
