3. My relationship to Sport journalism
• Sport Journalism is closest to me because I play Ice Hockey and I
face it almost every day by doing Interviews, seeing someone
taking photos of me or our team and our games are televised.
• Sport Journalism is postive and negative at the same time but I
have not faced the bad side of the Sport Journalism, at least not
yet.
• I’m watching something related to Sport Journalism every single
day.
• I could do this as a job
4. How covid has affected me?
• As an hockey player obviously it has affected me.
• I haven’t been able to play any hockey games since last March so
the break has been very long.
• It hasn’t affected me financially but it has ristricted me a lot. For
example in the Spring I was in Lockdown so I could not move
anywhere away from my home.
• I have to mask in the US and can’t travel at all without getting an
permission.
• I can see it in my everyday basics and I think this situation is going
to be our new normal.
5. Riku Laukkanen
• Riku Laukkanen is Finnish sport journalist and more into Ice
Hockey, Soccer and Football.
• His job is to take photos from Hockey games in Finland also abroad
like United States.
• I know Riku from Finland because he was taking photos from my
games
• I interviewed Riku and asked some questions about the situation
right now with Covid-19 and some other questions.
6. Questions to Riku
• 1. How has Covid-19 affected to you and your job?
• 2. What do you need to do your job?
• 3. Best & Worst things in your job.
7. Riku’s answers on question 1.
• For me Covid-19 affected a lot. I lost an lot of money and there were no games what to
shoot so it was very hard time for me. Luckily the situation looks going to right way but
it will take a long time to everything going back to normal. Also there is a limit for
photographers in games so it is more difficult to get into games.
8. Question 2
• If we look at the Sport Photographing, it is probably the most expensive sector. You can
start with little bit cheaper equipments and take good photos with them but at the end
of the day there is an limit for that especially when you taking pohotos in the dark. If
you want you can spent thousands of euros in equipments so it is very expensive if you
want to do it at high level.
• Also I don’t know is this demand but in my opinion you have to have some knowledge
from the sport you are shooting.
• I also want to point out that I think you need some kind of ¨eye¨ for being good at it.
Just good equipments do not make you good at taking pictures but on the other hand you
can take good pictures with a cheaper equipments if you have that special ¨eye¨.
• I takes a lot of time and you have to be very passioned about it. For example from that
time when you leave from your home to shoot Ice Hockey game and when you come back
home and you have edited the photos, it can take eight hours easily for to do all that.
9. Question 3
• The best part about doing this job is that I am able to go places I would never go without
being a Photographer. Also being part of something huge and immortalize that kind of
special events.
• Sport Photo shooting is also one of my biggest passions and probably biggest passion after
my family. I just love to do it and gives me a joy.
• Worst things are probably that it takes so much time from me and my family suffers from
it a little bit. Even though my wife is good with my job, it is still pity to skip for example
my kids graduations because I have a job to do. Luckily I can do my own schedule so that
doesn’t happen that often.
