Homo sapiens originated in Africa around 250,000 years ago and spread throughout the world. Before the Agricultural Revolution, humans lived in small communities and subsisted through gathering and hunting. The Agricultural Revolution began around 12,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, marking a transition to sedentary living and cultivation of crops. This led to exponential population growth and the rise of complex civilizations centered around cities in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Peru, and Mexico. While early civilizations left a positive legacy through their art, technology, and knowledge, they also contributed to social inequalities, oppression, slavery, and warfare.
