Cross platform mobile backend with mobile servicesJames Quick
Interested in developing cross platform mobile apps? Have you thought about how to connect your apps in the back end? Your app does not become very powerful without data powering it. Azure Mobile Services is quick and easy, but powerful, way to provide data storage (accessible through REST API calls), Push Notifications, and authentication with Microsoft Accounts. All of this functionality works on each of the top mobile platforms, including Android, iOS, and Windows! We will take a look at the Azure portal as well as the tooling built into Visual Studio giving you, the developer, a couple of different options for setting up your backend and quickly putting you on your way to making your first cross platform mobile app!
This session will be an early opportunity to get a look at the new Universal Windows Platform as well as Visual Studio Community 2015.

Azure in-place virtual machine migration eliminates virtual machine reboots during critical security updates for Host OS
While critical Host OS security updates previously caused a reboot, most virtual machines now benefit from Azure in-place virtual machine migration that only pauses them for up to 30 seconds, while the local temporary disk and memory state are preserved. Your virtual machines already benefit from this capability for certain critical security updates and, with an upcoming platform update later in 2016, we’ll eliminate the need for virtual machine reboot for most Host OS patches. Our goal is to eliminate the need for virtual machine reboots for all Host OS updates.
Azure SQL Data Warehouse is now GA in most regions where Azure Premium Storage is generally available, and introduces new, higher compute options—3000 DWU (Data Warehouse Unit) and 6000 DWU—for more demanding analytics workloads. SQL Data Warehouse decouples compute and storage for the freedom to scale and right-size your environment. You pay only for the storage you use and the compute you want, just when you need it.
1 Sept: introduce GA pricing for both compute and storage—including a shift to selling storage in 1 TB allocations.
With SQL Server Stretch Database, you can dynamically stretch warm and cold transactional data from Microsoft SQL Server 2016 to Azure. Unlike typical cold data storage, the data is always at hand. Stretch Database lets you retain data longer and more affordably than typical enterprise storage. Depending on how often the data will be accessed, you can choose the appropriate level of service, then scale up or down as needed. Using Stretch Database doesn’t require any application changes. You can also use Stretch Database with new Always Encrypted technology, which helps protect your data at rest and in motion.
Stretch Database DSU will be renamed Compute DSU and will initially remain at 50 percent public preview billing. These services will be switched to general availability pricing (100 percent) on September 1, 2016. Also starting September 1, 2016, Stretch Database customers can take advantage of a new Stretch Database-specific storage meter.
Always Encrypted helps protect sensitive data, such as credit card numbers or national identification numbers (for example, US Social Security numbers), stored in Microsoft SQL Server databases and SQL Database. Allows clients to encrypt sensitive data inside client applications and not reveal the encryption keys to the database. As a result, Always Encrypted distinguishes between those who own the data (and can view it) and those who manage the data (but should have no access).
An Always Encrypted-enabled driver installed on the client computer achieves this by automatically encrypting and decrypting sensitive data in the client application. The driver encrypts the data in sensitive columns before passing the data to the Database Engine, and automatically rewrites queries so that the semantics to the application are preserved. Similarly, the driver transparently decrypts data, stored in encrypted database columns, contained in query results.
Microsoft Power BI Embedded is generally available with a standard GA SLA in nine datacenters worldwide. Allows application developers to embed stunning, fully interactive reports and visualizations in customer-facing apps without the time and expense of having to build custom controls from the ground up. New functionalities in the service include row-level security for advanced filtering in embedded reports to support multiple-tenant SaaS app scenarios. We also simplified the Power BI Embedded pricing model and effective September 1, 2016, we’ll introduce a per-report, session-based pricing model rather than charge per report element render.
Microsoft R Server is the most broadly deployable enterprise-class analytics platform for R available today. With a variety of big-data capabilities, including statistics, predictive modeling, and machine learning, R Server supports the full range of analytics based on open-source R: exploration, analysis, visualization, and modeling. By using and extending open-source R, R Server is fully compatible with R scripts, functions, and CRAN packages and can analyze data at enterprise scale. We also addressed in-memory limitations of open-source R by adding parallel and chunked data processing in R Server, so users can run analytics on data much bigger than what fits in main memory.
R Server allows you to write once and deploy across multiple platforms with minimal effort, whether on-premises or in the cloud. For Microsoft R Server in the Windows platforms, please use SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Virtual Machine and enable R Services.
Microsoft Cognitive Services is GA as of 1 July 2016. Available as stand-alone services.

VNet Peering for Azure Virtual Network lets you directly link two virtual networks in the same region. Virtual machine resources in both virtual networks can connect directly through private IP addresses as if they were part of the same network. VNet Peering routes packets between virtual networks through the internal Azure backbone network so there’s no gateway in the path. This allows for a low-latency, high-bandwidth connection between virtual machines in the virtual networks. VNet Peering also allows transit through the peered VNets, so a Network Virtual Appliance or a VPN gateway in one virtual network can be used by a virtual machine in another peered VNet. Peering works across virtual networks in different subscriptions and between an ARM (V2) and ASM (V1) virtual network. It does not work between two ASM virtual networks
