- #6 Been doing this awhile… As we think about how Microsoft is poised to take advantage of the shift to services going forward, let’s step back a minute and just set some context about where we are and where we’ve been We been doing business and delivering software through the cloud for over a decade Most people are surprised to learn about where we’re leading… Our online properties (WL, MSN) see some 600 million unique users every month The Xbox guys pushed out some 5 petabytes of content over Xbox Live during the week of Christmas We process up to 9.9 billion messages a day via WL Messenger We have over 500 million active Windows Live IDs The BPOS guys have a million paying users in 36 countries and regions Even MS Update/Windows Update … operates at incredible scale - pushes out over a petabyte of updates every month to millions of servers and hundreds of millions of PCs Even back when we pushed out SP2 for Windows XP, over 250 million of those PCs were upgraded with WU – upgrading a desktop operating system is as incredibly sophisticated a cloud service as you will ever see, and we did it at massive scale (hundreds of millions) We’re not new at this… Our breadth of experience spans 30 years w/consumers, over 20 years in the enterprise, and over a decade providing services in the cloud When these competencies, these muscles come together – our understanding of enterprise requirements combined w/our ability to scale delivery through the cloud, for example – you get things like MS Online services. - #7 So, what is Software Plus Services? It is software on the desktop, device plus services in the cloud that are Partner or Microsoft hosted. It provides customers with choice and flexibility of all the different deployment options, including on premise, partner hosted, Microsoft hosted, or a combination. It is the best of both worlds, not just the cloud but the user is in control and there are more deployment choices for IT. Today we will focus on Microsoft Hosted – the “cloud” experience. At this time, I will turn the presentation over to Chris who will share with you information about our New Microsoft Online Subscription program. Chris . . .

The key characteristics of Software as a Service include: Network-based access to, and management of, commercially available software Activities managed from central locations rather than at each customer's site, enabling customers to access applications remotely via the Web Application delivery in a one-to-many model (single instance, multi-tenant architecture), including architecture, pricing, partnering, and management characteristics Centralized feature updating to download patches and upgrades. Integration into a larger network of communicating software - either as part of a mashup or as a plugin to a platform as a service. Infrastructure as a Service -Instead of owning and running your facility, servers, and network, you rent flexible computing capacity when you need it. The key characteristics of Infrastructure as a service include: Resources delivered as a service including servers, network equipment, memory, CPU, disk space, data center facilities, Dynamic scaling of infrastructure which scales up and down based on application resource needs Variable cost service using fixed prices per resource component Multiple tenants typically coexist on the same infrastructure resources Enterprise grade infrastructure allows mid-size companies to benefit from the aggregate compute resource pools Platform as a Service - Instead of owning and maintaining systems (e.g. development, testing, production, etc.) you rent them when you need them. The key characteristics of Platform as a service include: Services to develop, test, deploy, collaborate, host and maintain applications in the same integrated development environment Web based user interface creation tools ease the creation of user interfaces Multi-tenant architecture with concurrency management, scalability, failover and security. Integration with web services and databases allows compositions and re-use of services Provide insight into the inner workings of their applications, and the behavior of their users.

- #11 Key point: Windows Azure is hosted in Microsoft data centers around the world. Windows Azure provides compute power, storage, and automated service management, as well as easy connectivity to other applications and access control to provide secure authorization and authentication of access to cloud resources. Also hosted in the Windows Azure platform is Microsoft SQL Azure, providing relational database services and automated management of relational service.
- #12 Let’s now drill down on “Online” services. Online services is a set of enterprise class software delivered as subscription services hosted by Microsoft and sold through partners. Our goals is to create a service option for every one of our business software products. The initial set of services we are offering focus on the business productivity capabilities that includes Exchange Online, Office SharePoint Online, Office Live Meeting, Office Communications Online, Exchange Hosted Services and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online. Exchange Hosted Services are attached services that include filtering, archiving, encryption and continuity. We plan to add many more Online services to this portfolio over time. The Business Productivity Online Suite, shown here, includes Exchange Online, Office SharePoint Online, Office Communications Online, and Office Live Meeting. Office Communications Online is currently available as part of the dedicated offering or as a multi-tenant offering.
- #14 For reasons such as data compliance, customization requirements, flexibility, etc., customer may want to deploy a hybrid approach between online and on-premise. Another key value we provide is the flexibility to choose your deployment model between on-premises and online by geography, workload or roles. In this example, the customer decides to deploy Exchange Server in their own datacenter for users in their headquarter and have their branch office users subscribe to Exchange Online. To enable a seamless experience such as a single address book, we provide a tool to synchronize entries in your on-premises directory with our Online directory. With this tool, any changes you make on your directory are synchronize with our directory such as changing adding or deleting a user, change user attributes, etc. For SharePoint, in this example, customer can choose to deploy a set of site collections on their on-premise SharePoint deployment and another set of site collections is deployed on SharePoint Online. In this case, no matter where the users are at, they can access to sites from both site collections.

Microsoft is making a major investing in these data centers, which, is different from competitors using legacy data centers. CyberTrust provides both application and physical security validation: 4 of the 5 largest WW banks use CyberTrust and more than 95% of all information security software. What they found: “…not discover a single device with any high-severity vulnerabilities … I can comfortably say in three years of conducting internal scans I have never seen an internal scan without any high-severity vulnerabilities”—CyberTrust “We run a “data center within a data center” approach for some services, including BPOS, which includes motion sensors, 24/7 secured access, biometric controlled access systems, video camera surveillance, and onsite physical security.
