Michael K. Wanjagi has over 19 years of experience as an electrical engineer working in manufacturing, service industries, and renewable energy projects. He holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nairobi. His career has included roles as a design engineer, projects engineer, and consultant involved in the design, implementation, and maintenance of power distribution systems, solar energy projects, and rural electrification across Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, and other East African countries. Currently he works as a design engineer for the Rural Electrification Authority in Kenya.

Electrical Engineer with 19years post –graduate experience in the manufacturing and service
industries. Also been a member of the Kenya Bureau of Standard technical committee for
establishment of renewable energy standards, International Solar energy Society [I.S.E.S] and the
Engineers Registration Board [ERB] as a graduate Engineer.

Design Engineer
Design of power distribution systems for 66 KV, 33 KV, 11 KV medium voltages for grid extension and
for off-grid systems.
When I joined the organization in February 2008, it was still in the formative stages and I contributed to
the setting up of the structures within the organization in particular preparation of design department’s
operation procedures which were adopted by the department. I represent the organization in the
standardization working group of the Power Institute of East and Southern Africa (PIESA) which I still
represent. I was also the designated projects Engineer for World Bank and other foreign funded projects.
I have also been trained as an ISO 2009 internal Auditor and am the departments’ ISO representative in
the implementation committee and contributed to the organizations’ ISO certification in the year 2011.

Sample projects executed in this period include
• PVMT/FC Funded PV solar project for Muramati SACCO [Murang’a Kenya]. Responsible
for design, costing and product sourcing and procurement, preparation of supply & execution
logistics, preparations of grant proposals for review by PMVTI/FC, evaluation of performance of
PV systems installed under a pilot project and proposing recommendations. Proposed project
budget of US$ 1.2 Million in a span of 7 years.
• Rehabilitation of 200m2 solar water heating systems for Kenya Pipeline Company staff housing
at Miritini, Momba.ssa. Assessment of existing systems and recommending remedial action,
redesign, costing procurement of materials and supervising the work at site.
• Rehabilitation, service and maintenance of solar Water pumping system for pastoral
community at Sericho, North Eastern Kenya, funded by UNICEF.
• Design, supply, installation, testing, hand over and commissioning of solar powered systems
for Mennonite Hospital at Mugumu, Tanzania.
• Design, production and installation of solar PV power for navigational beacon for UNOSOM,
Somalia at Mogadishu airport under the International Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO].
