Corporate Training
Very Brief Introduction
• Do you have a cell phone or tablet with you?
• Here’s my Bio: http://www.linkedin.com/in/debsorrill

• What was my career path?
  • What is the most important thing to notice on linkedin ?
University Instruction and
Corporate Training
Differences – Corporate

• Trend toward eLearning and rapid development
   • MHO - Future is likely to be blended learning with fewer
instructors and a preference for online forms of education

• Trend toward instructors and designers having online
  production and social connecting skills

• Best practices and standard development procedures for
instruction are still necessary - needs analysis, training
  plan, goals, objectives, etc.
Q&A
• What is the outlook for training jobs and what type of
  employers to target?
  • Current slow economy = high competition
  • Babyboomer retirement may soon increase your choices
  • Lead with your strength –
• How difficult would it be to break into corporate training
  given their background?
  • Since your backgrounds are all different, that is difficult to
answer. What I can talk about are way to lower the entry
    barriers.
Strategies for Breaking
Into Training
• Ways to prepare – you need to be able to develop
  presentations, as well as, instruct.
     • Join organizations to learn more:
        • ASTD – American Society for Training and Development
        • eLearningGuild – eLearningguild.com (free membership)
        • UC Davis Educational Technology (do they have a group?)
     • Volunteer in a way that demonstrates your expertise and develops
       a portfolio – example:
        • Programming/technical – volunteer - Code for America
        • Instructor/Writer – volunteer at Kahn Academy
     • Internships – great if you can get into a training department, but
doesn’t have to be in training.
        • Make connections.
        • Offer to help:
           • Build any type of presentation in Powerpoint (know it better than they do)
           • Volunteer to write communications needed
           • Participate in any type of social connections networks that the corporation is
using ( you can use this at some point in your life as an instructor)
Strategies for Breaking
Into Training
• Ways to prepare – you need to be able to develop
  presentations, as well as, instruct.
     • Get a corporate job in your field of expertise
        • Use corporate education funds to get certificates in training and
          development.
     • Find out what the next big trend in education is and develop
skills and portfolio pieces for it.
• What kinds of educational
                       technology implementations do you
                       envision at Davis? +
                     • I see online instruction as a broad field that involves
online courses, but also the integration of technology into
face-to-face and hybrid delivery formats. This breadth is
especially important because the field of educational
technology has separated face-to-face and online
learning into discrete categories, but now they are
blending. Technology is present in the classroom, and
the interactivity of face-to-face is happening online with
synchronous tools like video conferencing and webinars.

                     • Specific to Davis, I see the STEM disciplines’ large
classes and labs as a good opportunity for integrating
technology. I’d like to see us redesign our teaching and
learning in these environments so that we are making
better use of the time spent in the physical classroom.
This might mean having students complete a learning
activity and assessment online, which will allow the
instructor to more appropriately focus class time on the
content with which the students are struggling.

  1. How many of you have smartphone? How many of you are on facebook? How many are on linked-in?My bio and this presentation can be found on linked-in/in/debsorrill
  2. Currently, I am working for PG&E and have brought you some flyers different opportunities that may work for you. I am here, though, as an alumnus of UCD and member of ASTD and someone who has recently delt with the questions you are asking yourself. In this economy, finding jobs in corporate training as instructors is competitive. I do see the job market picking up some. – because the job market, economy and exciting technologies framing our world today mean that jobs in education, instruction are changing, there will probably be fewer pure instructors in the future, and the educator’s skill set looks to be changing as much in the next five years as it has in the past five years.
  3. Future is likely blended learning with a greater emphasis online presentations with instructor support/facilitationThere is a trend toward instructors and designers having online production skillsSome newer presentation forms tend to make it simpler to create online instructionBeing able to follow best practices and standard development forms for instruction are still necessary.
  4. In this market, lead with your strength – target corporations that need your expertise.

Other differences – pace of development and instruction – fasterLess individual instruction, tutoring and homework ( this isn’t trivial) – rapid instruction with no reinforcement creates memory retention challengesTrend toward rapid development - eLearning and rapid developmentFuture is likely blended learning with a greater emphasis online presentations with instructor support/facilitationThere is a trend toward instructors and designers having online production skillsSome newer presentation forms tend to make it simpler to create online instructionBeing able to follow best practices and standard development forms for instruction are still necessary.
