Achieving visibility into logistics data at lower levels of the health system is always a challenge for logisticians. Developed by IAPHL and JSI, the presentation “mHealth for Logistics: Solving Data Challenges through Mobile Technology” is an introduction to the ways in which mobile technology can improve your logistics programs. The purpose of this presentation is to give an overview of several of the mobile solutions available to program implementers.
We begin by presenting the least resource-intensive intervention and work our way up to the most robust mobile information systems. Categories of tools that are covered include: mobile forms for data collection; basic SMS databases for routine reporting; paying for a customizable generic platform; and working with a developer to build a new system to your specifications from scratch. The presentation also explains practical aspects of implementing mobile solutions, such as costs and human resources required, to help viewers gauge which options best meet their needs.

Increasingly modern companies are creating their own instrumentation, but there is a large base of generic instrumentation of software. Fixing monitoring issues requires people, process, and technology. In this talk we will cover many common issues seen in the real world. For example decisions on what should be monitored or collected from a technology and a business perspective. This requires process and coordination.
We will investigate what instrumentation is most scalable and effective across languages this includes the commonly used APIs and possibilities to capture data from common languages like Java, .NET and PHP, but we’ll also go into methods which work with Python, Node.js, and golang. We will cover browser and mobile instrumentation techniques. How these are done? which APIs are being used? What open source tools and frameworks can be leveraged? Most importantly how to coordinate and communicate requirements across your organization.

Each year in Vermont, 4-6 infants die of unsafe sleep environments. The Vermont Department of Health contracted with JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), to study the major barriers Vermont parents and professionals face with regard to infant safe sleep. The research examined: what parents know, have heard, or find confusing about infant safe sleep practices; decisions around infant safe sleep practice; and response to existing infant safe sleep materials.
Some of the major themes with implications for future
communication efforts included parents’ need to be respected as good and competent caregivers, the desire for information that addresses the unique sleep challenges in their family, and
a skepticism of infant safe sleep research and messaging.
Although parents are highly motivated to do what is best for their baby and are aware of the basic infant safe sleep guidelines, parents who struggle the follow the guidelines feel they must choose between sleep and safety, or adapt the guidelines as their version of “safe sleep.”These parents feel they are being set up for failure, due to a lack of guidance to get their baby to sleep in a safe sleep environment. Parents want assistance grounded in the reality of the challenges
and choices they face to get their babies to sleep while keeping
them safe.
Binge-Free 603: What's Your Reason? Preventing Binge Drinking in Young Adults...JSI
This poster was presented by Christin D'Ovidio at the National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing & Media.
Through a contract with the NH Department of Health and Human Services, JSI conducted peer-crowd/peer-group validation and formative research to inform a public health prevention campaign targeting young adults (YA), aged 21-25, identified as most likely to engage in the misuse of alcohol.
The campaign (Binge-Free 603: What’s Your Reason?) addresses binge drinking behaviors and utilizes harm reduction messaging to create an effective marketing mix. JSI used a social norming, a social marketing approach, as the strategic planning framework for developing a campaign to decrease the prevalence of binge drinking in NH YA.
The resulting, highly-targeted campaign includes video production, illustration, social media assets (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Snapchat), A/B testing and geo-targeting to further hone effective messaging and reach, and a website.

These are some of the challenges which led to the birth of the need for a mobile reporting system.
Begin by defining what a gateway is. A gateway is a is either hardware (phone) or software (in this case the ILSGateway system) that acts as a bridge between two networks so that data can be transferred between a number of computers. For example, when you send an e-mail to a friend or when you log in to a Web site, there is a gateway that allows the connection take place. Often, your connection to a Web site will involve many smaller connections to other servers along the way. In these cases, a number of gateways are used. In our case, using mobile phones and a website we will create a logistics information gateway. The mobile reporting system, to be known as the ILSGateway will in a combined effort seek support and strengthen the paper based integrated logistics system (ILS) while improving the availability and visibility of family planning commodities. Pilot is in 109 facilities and has been going on for 1 year
97% of facilities improved their on-time submission rates for stock reports, which are critical for resupply decision making. A further 93% improved their stock counting exercises because of the routine mobile alerts they received. Importantly, 45% of facilities reported improved product availability, indicating the overall positive effect the ILSGateway has had on the essential medicine supply system in Tanzania.
