A genetic disorder or a hereditary disease is caused by mutations in the gene or genome of an
individual. It can be passed down through the generations, putting the offspring and family at risk.
In diseases like these, genetics plays a crucial role. The disease process is aided by variations in
our DNA and changes in the functioning of DNA, either alone or in combination, as well as the
environment.
Drug therapy is usually not the first line of treatment for genetic disorders and no prescription
exists to cure them. While no genetic medication has been licensed for use in the treatment or cure
of any inherited human disease, research is still ongoing to develop these drugs. Medications can
be limited to symptomatic relief only. These illnesses are treated rather than healed because they
are permanent. Gene therapy, bone marrow stem cell transplantation, gene transfer, somatic stem
cell therapy, RNA alteration, and, in the near future, embryonic stem cell therapy are all possible
treatments.
Karyotyping is a crucial technique for detecting any abnormalities in the chromosomes of the fetus
or the newborn. Chromosomal banding has been used to identify chromosome anomalies on a
regular basis. Since not all chromosomal aberrations can be detected, researchers have developed
newer methods and techniques such as FISH, M-FISH, and SKY.
Nature's guide to the genetic origin of many mysterious human diseases is chromosomal
anomalies. As a result, cytogenetic methods will undoubtedly remain invaluable resources for
diagnosing genetic disorders and indicating potential care and management options.

A sample of 121participants was randomly selected from 121 households that were selected through stratified proportionate sampling techniques Results:Thirty five (35%) defined epilepsy by describing what happens during an epileptic fit. 30% defined epilepsy by giving signs and symptoms of the condition, 24% explained epilepsy by explaining cause of the condition while 10% explained using perception:Causes; Respondents gave varied responses on causes for epilepsy, they included, curse, breaking a taboo, heredity, acute illness such as Malaria and complications from physical injury to the brain: Treatment; 50.8% said epilepsy can be treated using anti-epileptic medicine. 11.5% said herbal medication could heal epilepsy, 6% said eating cooked dog meat could heal epilepsy, 20% said rituals and animal sacrifices could heal epilepsy while 1% said epilepsy can be resolved by killing the person who is suffering epilepsy.Conclusion:Though signs and symptoms of epilepsy are well known,there is knowledge deficit on causes and treatment of epilepsy.

Wearable technologies have grown in quantity and quality over the past decades, gaining widespread adoption. Still, ensuring that wearables properly meet users’ needs remains an open challenge. Through illustrative examples of diverse applications, in this talk I provide an overview of wearable computing. I discuss the challenges and opportunities in the design of user interfaces for wearable interaction, and conclude with a roadmap for next-generation wearables.

Background:Epilepsy is a medical condition with serious social ramification. People living with epilepsy experience lowered quality of live and altered self-esteem as a result of stigma attached to their condition. This stigma may be attributed to knowledge deficit and different social meaning on epilepsy among populations.This study sort to assess knowledge and social construction of epilepsy and its treatment modalities among households in Vihiga County of Kenya.Method:A survey study was carried between January-June 2016. The study sort to understand knowledge on causes and treatment modalities of epilepsy among people living in Vihiga County. A sample of 121participants was randomly selected from 121 households that were selected through stratified proportionate sampling techniques Results:Thirty five (35%) defined epilepsy by describing what happens during an epileptic fit. 30% defined epilepsy by giving signs and symptoms of the condition, 24% explained epilepsy by explaining cause of the condition while 10% explained using perception:Causes; Respondents gave varied responses on causes for epilepsy, they included, curse, breaking a taboo, heredity, acute illness such as Malaria and complications from physical injury to the brain: Treatment; 50.8% said epilepsy can be treated using anti-epileptic medicine. 11.5% said herbal medication could heal epilepsy, 6% said eating cooked dog meat could heal epilepsy, 20% said rituals and animal sacrifices could heal epilepsy while 1% said epilepsy can be resolved by killing the person who is suffering epilepsy.Conclusion:Though signs and symptoms of epilepsy are well known,there is knowledge deficit on causes and treatment of epilepsy.

Interdecadal and interannual climate variability has led to emergence and reemergence of zoonoses in Kenya. We take cognizance of a community based approach in early and timely detection of RVF is vital to veterinary, health authorities and policy-makers in immediate decision making. It contributes to an integrated climate risk assessment of livestock vulnerability analysis using climate dependent RVF model to develop predictive risk maps that will be crucial in current and future control plans of other climate sensitive diseases and possibly provide Early Warning Systems (EWS). The output will contribute to institutional contingency frameworks dealing with concepts and indicators of warning systems which will facilitate the early identification of potential climate sensitive epidemics and decision support systems.

Wearable technologies have shown a large potential to amplify human abilities. Thanks to their close contact to the human body, their miniaturized dimensions and continuous data collection, wearable technologies are versatile, meeting system requirements across domains. Wearable technologies have grown in quantity and quality over the past decades, gaining widespread adoption. Still, ensuring that wearables properly meet users’ needs remains an open challenge. Through illustrative examples of diverse applications, in this talk I provide an overview of wearable computing. I discuss the challenges and opportunities in the design of user interfaces for wearable interaction, and conclude with a roadmap for next-generation wearables.

Smartwatches have a large potential to support everyday activities. However, their potential as assistive technologies in inclusive academic environments is unclear. To investigate how smartwatches can support students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) to perform activities that require emotional and behavioral skills and involve communication, collaboration and planning, we implemented WELI. WELI (Wearable Life) is a wearable application designed to assist young adults with IDDs attending a postsecondary education program. This paper reports on the user-centric design process adopted in the development of WELI, and describes how smartwatches can assist students with IDDs in special education. The results reported are drawn from 8 user studies with 58 participants in total. WELI features include behavioral intervention, mood regulation, reminders, checklists, surveys and rewards. Results indicate that several considerations must be taken into account when designing for students with IDD, and that overall the students are enthusiastic about adopting an innovative smartwatch application in class, as they reacted positively about the technology and features provided.

However, the dynamic changes in the context of use during the user interaction, summed with the heterogeneity of users’ profiles, challenges the design of effective interfaces and interactive solutions for wearable technologies. In addition to that, wearables often have limited resources: their computational power, processing capabilities, screen dimensions and modalities are often constrained. Finally, the novelty in this market is characterized by limited guidance to effectively aid developers and designers to ensure high usability levels and to promote a great user experience in the design of the wearable interaction. To provide a high quality user experience, the context of use where the user interaction takes place needs to be thoroughly investigated and understood, accommodating its dynamic changes, as well as the specific needs and requirements of diverse users’ profiles in the design of interfaces and interaction. In this talk, you will learn about how context impacts the design of wearables, especially concerning wrist-worn devices, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches. More specifically, you will gain knowledge about: (1) a set of contextual factors that impact the wrist-worn interaction, ranging from environment, to platform and user profile, and (2) how those factors must be considered in the design of the user interaction for wearables, benefiting multimodal interactive solutions as well as multidisciplinary application domains.

Toward a Visual Vocabulary for Privacy Concepts
This document discusses the development of a visual vocabulary for privacy concepts. It notes that privacy is a multi-disciplinary concept without universal definitions. Existing privacy solutions like terms and conditions are often too technical, long and complex.
