Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, a Boeing 777 carrying 298 people from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border on July 17, 2014 after being shot down by a surface-to-air missile. Most passengers were Dutch, with many others from Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and other countries. The crash occurred during a conflict between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. An international investigation later determined that the plane was downed by a Russian-made Buk missile launched from separatist-controlled territory in Ukraine, but Russia denied the findings and blamed Ukraine.
