ON July 17, Malaysia Airlines
Flight MH17 travelling from
Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur
crashes in eastern Ukraine, close
to the Russian border, with 298
people on board.
The two sides in the Ukrainian
conflict accuse each other of
shooting the plane down. The
incident and its aftermath
sparks international outrage and
condemnation.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri

and requests Borodai to hand
over the remains of 282 people
to representatives from the
Netherlands, the two black

releases 20 names of Malaysians
who perished onboard MH17.
On Aug 22, the special
Malaysia Airlines Flight
MH6129 bearing the remains
of 20 Malaysian victims of
the tragedy arrives at the
Bunga Raya Complex of KL
International Airport (KLIA).
All 20 remains are loaded
into a convoy of hearses,
while a minute’s silence is
held nationwide, including
in vehicles and public
transportation.
The remains of Muslim
victims are laid to rest in
their respective hometowns in
Taiping, Ipoh and Teluk Intan
in Perak; Putrajaya and Kuala
Lumpur in the Klang Valley;
Seremban in Negri Sembilan;
Muar and Segamat in Johor and
Kuching in Sarawak.
On Aug 23, the ashes of the
cremated body of Karamjit
Singh Karnail Singh, who was
on board MH17, are scattered
into the sea off Port Klang.
On Aug 24, the second batch
of victims arrive on special
MAS Flight MH19 bearing the
remains of chief steward Mohd
Ghafar Abu Bakar and Universiti
Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lecturer
Ng Shi Ing. A minute of silence
is held nationwide.
On Aug 29, Malaysia Airlines
announces it will slash 6,000
jobs, trim its route network and
replace its CEO under plans
to stave off bankruptcy after
the two air tragedies this year
which have plunged the already
troubled carrier deeper into
crisis.
