Sensory memory briefly stores environmental stimuli received through the senses. Information then transfers to short-term memory for 2-30 seconds, where it is encoded iconically or echoically with a capacity of 7 +/- 2 items on average. Without rehearsal, information rapidly disappears from short-term memory. Long-term memory then stores information semantically and indefinitely with unlimited capacity.
