Meeting notes for LAL Sept 11/13- Met at Tompkins Funeral Home 3pm, Board Room downstairs
Attendees: Chris Winter, Tony Gargaro, Carolyn Faubert, Gary MacDonald, Bill Dunford, Lois Hodgins,
Tina Bailey, Dawn Harris
Reviewed the meeting notes from June and July. Reviewed some of the Top 10 suggestions
that came out of May 30th event. Most of the suggestions can be met through either Leave a
Legacy meetings or from information on the National Leave a Legacy website. List of partners is
provided on the website and in the 55+ magazine that was given out at the event. Some of the
requests for mentorship and training is bigger than the mandate of Leave a Legacy, however we
can work at making sure partners are aware of educational opportunities in our community
through organizations like AGP.
Our finances are in good shape. We had a net profit of $500 from the May 30th event after all
registrations were paid. We have a good buffer in the SEO account that helps to supplement
when necessary or look at raising awareness in our community. We do get a small grant based
on partnerships from CAGP every year however that is meant to help us educate the population
about Leave a Legacy and not for education purposes of our partners. Need to maintain a clear
distinction between the two.
Strategic Plan for SEO- LAL is in the development stage and a core group of 4-5 partners will
spend the next month or so defining what we are about, and what we can offer and where we
want to go in the next two years. There are many great things we could do but since this is a
volunteer group we need to find balance. Many of the partners give generously of their time
and talents because they believe in spreading the good news of what Leave a Legacy can do for
our community. If everyone had an up-to-date will and chose to give back to a charity of their
choice, we would all win and be less dependent on the government to meet the needs of the
community. That is the message we need to get out to the public but how best to do that?
This core group of Deb Paus, Tim Brown, Gary MacDonald, Dawn Harris and a couple of others
will work diligently to provide us with a report for November’s meeting. If you want to be a part
of this discussion please let us know and Gary will follow up with you for your input.
Partnership renewals have been slow in coming in since summer break. The renewal is July
2013-June 2014. We need to follow-up with all the partners locally and make sure they want to
renew and help facilitate that renewal. The more partners we have join us both from Charities
and professional advisors, the more funds we have to look at media promotion and raising
awareness. IF you have not yet renewed, please do so and if you want to be removed, please let
us know that as well. Much appreciated. Monthly meetings are not mandatory yet beneficial to
ALL those who attend.
We have two opportunities coming up for education….

1) Gary MacDonald is hosting two events on Major Gift Development on Oct 30/ 31st.
One in Kingston and One in Belleville with Ron McClory from Toronto who has been
involved with major gift fundraising for many years. Contact Gary for more
information.
2) AGP will be hosting National Philanthropy Day on November 14th in Kingston. You
can get more information at their website and it will be a great day of education and
making connections with other charities.
Tim Brown will be stepping down as Chairperson for LAL-SEO as of January. He is taking
on the presidency of AGP Kingston chapter and will no longer be able to do both roles as
charity and promotion are not part of his current position. We are looking for someone
or two people to co-chair the position?? The strategic plan for LAL will help us
determine where we are going, how often we meet and how to build partnerships. This
will be completed before year end as a template for the future. Please speak to Dawn
or Tim if you are interested in this position.
Finally we spoke about Ideas for Promotion of Leave a Legacy. Next meeting we are
asking each partner that attends to bring samples of how they promote leaving a legacy
and we will have ideas from Leave a Legacy website as well. There are so many great
ideas floating between us that we don’t have to recreate the wheel. Let’s take some
time to share from our experiences and help one another grow in this area. We will
also take a few minutes to review some Public Service Announcements that we might
consider for the future as well as the Powerpoint presentation that can be used when
speaking with groups about Leave a Legacy.
Next meeting is October 8th, 2013at Tompkins Funeral Home on Davis Drive Kingston
3pm- 4:30pm. Thanks so much to all those who attend! Your input is most valuable.

Meeting notes for lal sept 11

  • 1. Meeting notes for LAL Sept 11/13- Met at Tompkins Funeral Home 3pm, Board Room downstairs Attendees: Chris Winter, Tony Gargaro, Carolyn Faubert, Gary MacDonald, Bill Dunford, Lois Hodgins, Tina Bailey, Dawn Harris Reviewed the meeting notes from June and July. Reviewed some of the Top 10 suggestions that came out of May 30th event. Most of the suggestions can be met through either Leave a Legacy meetings or from information on the National Leave a Legacy website. List of partners is provided on the website and in the 55+ magazine that was given out at the event. Some of the requests for mentorship and training is bigger than the mandate of Leave a Legacy, however we can work at making sure partners are aware of educational opportunities in our community through organizations like AGP. Our finances are in good shape. We had a net profit of $500 from the May 30th event after all registrations were paid. We have a good buffer in the SEO account that helps to supplement when necessary or look at raising awareness in our community. We do get a small grant based on partnerships from CAGP every year however that is meant to help us educate the population about Leave a Legacy and not for education purposes of our partners. Need to maintain a clear distinction between the two. Strategic Plan for SEO- LAL is in the development stage and a core group of 4-5 partners will spend the next month or so defining what we are about, and what we can offer and where we want to go in the next two years. There are many great things we could do but since this is a volunteer group we need to find balance. Many of the partners give generously of their time and talents because they believe in spreading the good news of what Leave a Legacy can do for our community. If everyone had an up-to-date will and chose to give back to a charity of their choice, we would all win and be less dependent on the government to meet the needs of the community. That is the message we need to get out to the public but how best to do that? This core group of Deb Paus, Tim Brown, Gary MacDonald, Dawn Harris and a couple of others will work diligently to provide us with a report for November’s meeting. If you want to be a part of this discussion please let us know and Gary will follow up with you for your input. Partnership renewals have been slow in coming in since summer break. The renewal is July 2013-June 2014. We need to follow-up with all the partners locally and make sure they want to renew and help facilitate that renewal. The more partners we have join us both from Charities and professional advisors, the more funds we have to look at media promotion and raising awareness. IF you have not yet renewed, please do so and if you want to be removed, please let us know that as well. Much appreciated. Monthly meetings are not mandatory yet beneficial to ALL those who attend.
  • 2. We have two opportunities coming up for education…. 1) Gary MacDonald is hosting two events on Major Gift Development on Oct 30/ 31st. One in Kingston and One in Belleville with Ron McClory from Toronto who has been involved with major gift fundraising for many years. Contact Gary for more information. 2) AGP will be hosting National Philanthropy Day on November 14th in Kingston. You can get more information at their website and it will be a great day of education and making connections with other charities. Tim Brown will be stepping down as Chairperson for LAL-SEO as of January. He is taking on the presidency of AGP Kingston chapter and will no longer be able to do both roles as charity and promotion are not part of his current position. We are looking for someone or two people to co-chair the position?? The strategic plan for LAL will help us determine where we are going, how often we meet and how to build partnerships. This will be completed before year end as a template for the future. Please speak to Dawn or Tim if you are interested in this position. Finally we spoke about Ideas for Promotion of Leave a Legacy. Next meeting we are asking each partner that attends to bring samples of how they promote leaving a legacy and we will have ideas from Leave a Legacy website as well. There are so many great ideas floating between us that we don’t have to recreate the wheel. Let’s take some time to share from our experiences and help one another grow in this area. We will also take a few minutes to review some Public Service Announcements that we might consider for the future as well as the Powerpoint presentation that can be used when speaking with groups about Leave a Legacy. Next meeting is October 8th, 2013at Tompkins Funeral Home on Davis Drive Kingston 3pm- 4:30pm. Thanks so much to all those who attend! Your input is most valuable.
