Metta Bhavana meditation, or the meditation on loving-kindness, cultivates feelings of goodwill, friendliness, empathy and compassion. The Buddha taught this meditation to monks who were being harassed in the forest by tree spirits. Practicing Metta Bhavana, the monks filled the forest with loving-kindness, calming the spirits. There are many benefits to this practice, such as increased happiness, concentration and protection. The meditation involves sending wishes for safety, peace and well-being to oneself, loved ones, teachers, friends, enemies and all beings.
