The IPCC was jointly established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme to provide comprehensive assessments of the scientific basis of climate change. It has produced five assessment reports to date (1990, 1995, 2001, 2007, 2013-2014) as well as numerous special reports. The IPCC involves hundreds of scientists and experts from around the world to objectively evaluate climate change risks and response options. IPCC reports have informed major international agreements such as the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement by providing the scientific basis for understanding climate change. The IPCC and Al Gore Jr. were jointly awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to build understanding of human-caused climate change.
