2. How our skills were developed
During the course of the project, we engaged ourselves in
several activities that helped us learn about the many
different media mediums. We were provoked to think
outside the box when it came to composing the piece. This
included: angle variation – shooting from a range of
camera angles; video editing software - we utilized adobe
premier when editing the video, this enlightened and
taught us various skills in terms of editing; camera – we
used a Nikon D70 for the filming, attaining the perks and
faults related to shooting. Although we encountered a
turmoil of trepidation, in the end we accomplished the
goals we had set out in the beginning.
3. Inspiration
Our inspiration is Insidious (2010). A gripping story of a
family in search of help for their son, Dalton, who fell into
a coma after a mysterious incident in attic. Little do they
know that there is much more to this endless sleep than
meets the eye as they explore the paranormal, and
rediscover the past; the key to getting their son back once
and for all. The narrative of the trailer relates to Insidious.
This movie revealed a whole new realm to horror stories, it
has provided a platform for others to follow; we employed
the concept into our video, hoping to meet the
expectations of the movie itself.
4. Research and Planning
In order to produce the perfect product, research is the key
in encountering the audiences’ thoughts. In our research
we used questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires
gave us an insight as to what the target group wants us to
portray. Furthermore, the interviews were technical,
however they retained the audience in making the product.
We watched insidious several times, although it was rather
formidable, we learnt how the producers used the various
media mediums to compound the film.
5. Target Audience
Selecting a target audience is a head-scratcher because a key
part of creating and selling a product – be it tangible or
social media activity – is identifying the target audiences,
and trying to determine who they are, what kind of
content and information they would be interested in
getting, their consumption habits, and what kind of social
media services they are using, if any. The audience we
chose was that of 16 – 21 years. As we are of the same
group, we share the same aptitude and propensity;
therefore our result would meet the expectations.
6. Representation
The horror genre is particularly fruitful for considering
from a sociological perspective because it is unmatched by
other genres in terms of its shocking and fear-based
nature. It represents the fears and paranoia of the society
it was created for and by, but also reveals the sociological
implications of the characters and their actions. Horror
films represent their time period, their culture, and their
people and so become representative of a wide-range of
people.
7. Genre
We are a society that as the dying and the dead become removed
from our everyday lives, our interest in images of death and
dying intensifies. The horror film as a genre is often dismissed,
along these lines, as belonging within the lowbrow culture of
merely being another way to degrade women, standardize
violence, and also to disgust and shock audiences simply for the
sake of entertainment. This perspective ignores the true value
inherent in a horror film in its ability to question the social
structures, expectations, and norms of the society it was created
by. The horror genre has often been able to find national phobic
pressure points, and those books and films which have been the
more successful almost always seem to play upon and express
fears which exist across a wide spectrum of people.
8. Narrative
The narrative illustrates the strength of a family’s unity.
Their family bond is put to the test when they are hit by a
pandemonium ruckus; creating a turbulent deterrence
within themselves and the house. While in an elevated
state of mind, the individuals insidiously loose their minds.
The spiritual being present in the house is portrayed by a
young girl – stereotypical in most horror movies. The
trailer instigates the audience to think out of the box, the
open their minds to the many possibilities of the realm of
horror.
9. Editing Techniques
The horror conventions we used comprise of: mise-en-
scene - we used pathetic fallacy to create a dark and
abhorrent atmosphere (dull lighting, the use of flash);
night vision technique: this brought a sense of reality in
the product, moreover it is generally used in horror movies
as form of thrilling the audience.
