- 1. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Genre horror Chloe phillips
- 2. Narrative: Throughout the process of planning our film, we looked at different horror genre films, mood sets, mise en scene and sounds used. I looked at ‘Insidous’ and ‘paranormal activity’ in which is where films are set in creepy abandoned houses where people are possessed.We wanted to base our films on murder, like what takes place in these films.
- 3. Genre: We took a lot of time to plan our genre, and we had several options on which we could chose from and why we would chose it. We had the option of choosing either Horror or Comedy. We came to the final decision of Horror, as we thought it was more effective and would be more achievable, as with comedy not everyone has a similar sense of humor. Our film was planned to be filmed within a woods, where we beileve it would be most effective. We looked at films based in woods, such as ‘Cabin in the woods’ in which is where we based our film in a creepy woods like the one used in that film.
- 4. Examples of Horror films: Cabin in the woods, is a film in which location wise was similar to our idea of a film, As it is based within a woods, where it is creepy and a stereotypical scary place for anyone of any age. The woman in black, was another similar film to ours
- 5. Camera, Angle, Shot movement and position. We looked at shots and camera angles that are used within a majority of horror films and the ones we discovered were most popular were: Zoom, Pan shot, Medium close up, Long shot and Shallow focus.
- 6. Continuity and editing We edited our film so it looked as much like a horror film as was possible. We made the tension span of the film more rapid and we made the atmosphere creepier by using scary sounds and music. The pace of the rhythm of editing was implying the characters inequalities. We emphasized the verisimilitude of sounds such as the wind.
- 7. Sound We looked at examples of sounds and music that is used throughout horror films, and I liked the fact that some on which was scary, yet silence can be more effective than music in some cases, therefore in our film we chose to have some silent scenes, with diajectic and non diajectic sounds appearing, and the verisimilitude of some sounds exaggerated. http://soundbible.com/tags-horror-movie.html Here is a link I used to listen to different sounds and music used, I got a lot of sound and music ideas from this link as I believe it had some very relevant and appropriate sounds we could actually use.
- 8. Mise en scene We looked at different aspects of mise en scene in which include: costumes, makeup and props. I looked at what clothes are worn in similar horror films, and I looked at clothing used in ‘Cabin in the woods’.
- 9. Expressionism a dark atmosphere The lighting we used was varied, as we wanted it to have to create the scary tension. Therefore we chose to film in a woods, in the middle of nowhere, using only spotlights, in which highlighted the characters facial expressions, but still shows the creepy atmosphere. We chose to use lighting where we could see face silhouette. The colours used were a mixture of black and white and the daylight.
- 10. Typography The settings we chose are a woods, and outside a characters house. We chose these locations as they are nearby, ideal and just how we imagined they would look. We looked at films like ‘Cabin in the woods’ to see how films were shot, and how much time they spent filming specific scenes.
- 11. Iconography This is the scene where, the characters are setting off from home, to go and visit the woods and camp out over night, it is daylight here and we thought it would be the most ideal weather condition to use as it is light and doesn’t represent any particular danger. This is a scene where we used darkness as key. Darkness plays a large important part within horror films as darkness is a lot of peoples fears. The two colours contrast well as they are both bold and bland. Black represents death and white represents confusion or unknown.
