The media has increasingly portrayed an unrealistic thin body ideal for women since World War II that has been linked to negative effects. Several studies have found: 1) Women in Disney films from 1937-1997 were often associated with attractiveness and thinness. 2) Teen girls felt less confident and more dissatisfied with their bodies after viewing commercials with thin models. 3) Fifth graders were dissatisfied with their bodies after watching music videos or TV shows emphasizing thin ideals. 4) Teens who watched media focusing on thin ideals reported greater body dissatisfaction, especially girls watching soaps, music videos or magazines.
