In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
  forms and conventions of real
        media products?
• In all three of our media products we followed conventions of a typical female
artist’s music video, we have tried to link some parts of our music video, digipack
and magazine advert to that of typical music videos but have also tried to be
original and unique and follow the personality of our star. The main way we follow
the typical conventions of a females music video in our actual music video is the
‘lovers tiff’ between the male and female characters in our music video and we
feel this follows the conventions of typical pop-folk genre. Also I think we have a
strong link of star persona and conventions between all three of our media
products because they all use quirky and unusual techniques in them which is the
hidden link between all three of the products.
I feel this digipack follows conventions and genre techniques of that of the same star persona and
music genre and some other artists, because we have tried to keep it quirky using various camera
angles. Also we have used a magnifying glass in two of the photos to show the stars real personality
and show her fans her fun side. We have also used this technique to identify yourself with our star and
feel this adds a unusual edge to a standard female artists digipack. We have used guitars for the images
of the three other sides of the digipackwe have done this to literate the fact that our artist is quite ‘old
school’ and uses a lot of her own skills to create her music and we feel using images of the instruments
our artist uses follows conventions of the artists that use their own instruments to create their music.
This magazine ad follows the conventions typically of a female magazine advert more than
our digipack and mainly links to the digipack through the image, i.e make-up, hair and
composition of the image. Typically magazine adverts are quite image driven and we have
tried to follow this in the particular media product of ours and have found in research that
this happens with a lot of this genre of music. We have tried to make it symmetrical because
we felt this is more appealing to the eye and more eye catching, also we have used the same
image on either side because the shapes around our artists head point in towards the text so
it draws your eyes there after looking at the image of the artist. We have used the same font
as we used in the digipack to follow our own personal conventions and we feel this look
effective. We have decided to highlight her name in quite a girly pink to show that she does
have a ‘girly’ side to her and further follow the typical magazine advert.
We felt that this followed conventions of female artists music videos because of the
“lovers story” going on in the video, I also feel that using a love story and a split screen
of the two lovers “morning routine” makes the visuals match the lyrics because
throughout the whole of the lyrics and the fact the song is talking about them both
together and in our video them being both together side beside, but with effect of a
split screen. I feel this shot follows our star persona because the quirkiness and
originality of passing the water through the split screen from the girl to the boy,
matches the personality of our star. This also creates voyeurism of the female body
because the girl in this shot doesn’t know that the camera is on her its like looking into
he life and has slight voyeurism of the female body.
This shot is similar to that of real music videos of this genre because it is a close-up of
the artist creating a emotional bond with the audience, this follows conventions because
most music videos have a shot of the artist. In ours we used stopmotion so was difficult
to follow conventions of lip syncing so we decided to emphasize our artists quirky and
unusual side by adding selected and stand out lyrics and write them for her to hold up
this makes it look like she has wrote it and makes the music video more personal to her.
This links with our other media products because it’s a close up of the artist and we have
this in all of them so the audience can identify our star with the brand and this creates
visual motifs between all three of or products.
I feel this follows conventions of the genre because the artist is using her own
instrument and this further makes the video more personal and follows her star
persona, this links to the sound as well because there is a guitar playing on the
soundtrack and the visuals follows that. This part of our music video also links to our
digipack because we have put various images of guitars on this making the
album/digipack seem homegrown and add to the brand identity our star portrays. This
also has genre characteristics in it because of the guitar.
We used green screen in our video, we felt this added to the overall
quirkiness of the video and matched the lyrics because throughout its talking
about how she is always thinking about her lover and this just illiterates this
and amplifies the lyrics.
This would be a demand of the record label because it is a close up of the artist,
with the quirky visual style behind which is portrayed throughout all of our media
products, this part doesn’thave much link between lyrics and visuals but the music
has a dream like effect and the visuals creates that and emphasizes that dream like
effect because it looks like it she is in the sky and conventionally this has a dream
like effect and follows other videos like this. This links to our other music videos
because the side profile shot of the artist. We use this shot throughout our media
products because it helps to keep brand identity and meets the demands of the
record label also our star isn't into all the make up and isn't so image conscious so a
side profile shot throughout doesn’t follow the conventional images from females
artist.
In this shot it shows the little bit of lip syncing we have in our music video. This
links to our other media products because the same haircut and style is used,
also throughout the parts of our music video that the artist is in we haven’t
added any voyeuristic shot and camera work because this doesn’t follow our star
persona and the characteristics of our genre. This is also a close up of her eyes
and this is followed throughout the digipack because of the use of the magnifying
glass and us specifically highlighting her eyes to present her natural beauty.
