1. Media City Trip Report
On the trip to the Media City in Manchester we visited the BBC. We visited the radio section of the
BBC and we went to see what they had on offer in terms of careers in the radio industry. We met a
lot of people who worked at the BBC in Media City. They told us what their job roles were and how
they work around their jobs on daily basis. They also told us how they got the job and what they did
to actually get the job. We met a lot of people who worked for the BBC but the person who stood
out the most to me was a man called Bill Rice.
Bill Rice is a sports journalist for Manchester United. He works at
Media City. He goes to every home and away games for the club. He
also attends every press conference that Manchester United has. He
gathers all of his information and data and sends it to the BBC for
them to broadcast to the public. Bill told us how he started off in the
radio industry and what his sacrifices were in order for him to get a
job in the radio industry. He did things such as volunteering for
hospital radio, student radio and he also worked for free for a long
time. He also shadowed a lot of people that he met that did what he
wanted to do for a living. This is where you observe someone closely about what they do. With the
amount of voluntary work, work experiences and shadowing he eventually got offered a job at the
BBC and for him it was a dream come true.
He was also telling us that you don’t need a degree on what you want to do if its radio, television
and so on. At the end of the day you learn those skills on the job and you develop whilst you are
doing it. The key important thing that Bill said to us is that you really need to put yourself out there
you need to show people what you can do, and of course that will include a lot of voluntary work,
shadowing and work experiences. With a lot of effort and hard work you will succeed on whatever
you are doing.
With what Bill does it requires a lot of sacrifices. He was telling us that he literally has no time to see
his friends. With the job you tend to lose your social side. He was telling us that even if he had no
time to socialise he was happy with what he was doing. In my opinion, to me Bill is the one that
really shows how hard working he was and shows that he is reliable and dependable. To me in order
for you to do well in whatever you want to do you need to show a lot of effort and determination.
