1. While on our trip to Media City yesterday we meet a variety of people who worked there and told us
about their job roles. One of the people we met was Bill Rice who was a sports journalist for
Manchester United. His job required him to go to home and away matches and watch them for
Manchester United. He also use to commentate and go to conferences and ask the football
managers questions. Bill enjoyed his job but told us that it came with a downfall which is that you
don’t get a lot of a social life and you work long hours. Bill was very dedicated to his job and found
that it was his passion therefore didn’t mind working such long
hours.
While talking to us Bill explained how he got the job at the BBC
and what it took to get it. He told us that he did a lot of work
experience at local radio stations, going in every Wednesday
day and volunteering. He also shadowed over people which
ment that he had to watch what people did closely.
With the amount of un-paid work experience and shadowing
he did landed in him getting a full time job at BBC
commentating on live Manchester United matches. However he also told us that you don’t need a
degree in journalism to get a job. All you need is loads of experience and then you’re more likely to
get hired due to the fact you more experienced and it takes less time to train you. You have to be
prepared to give up a lot of free time and work very hard in order to get a decent job in the media
industry.
However he did repeat over and over again that you do lose out on your social life which can be a
big concern for some people. Bill didn’t mind and was happy to work long hours which require a lot
of effort. He also travels a lot to away matches which sometimes can be overseas and then
sometimes you will have to return back to England the following day and write a following report on
the match you have just seen.
Overall I think Bill was a great inspiration due to the fact he got to have his dream job through all his
hard work and dedication. He also showed that because he loved his job so much that he was very
smiley and happy while talking to us. Bill gave me a lot of advice in order to get my dream job which
will help me later on in the future.
