ALEX- This song is about living life with all its problems, and the problems are overwhelming, but in the end you know there's that special someone who somehow makes everything okay just by being there. The video amplifies these lyrics, it shows every day life and how feeling lonely can become powerful, but he over comes this by singing.
Mel-AndrewGoodwin's theory says there is three types of music videos, performance based, narrative or concept. Our music video has some performance based as he is singing on his own in a concert hall but also has the feeling of loneliness. This feeling of loneliness is followed throughout the whole of the music video.
Mel-The concept of the music video can be based around an idea. The idea of loneliness and feeling miserable and wanting loveThis is also represented by at the end of the music video, he goes for both a meal and gets in bed on his own. Also as the video is filmed from the beginning of the day to the end, it shows his journey on his own.
Alex- Lovesongs have traditional characteristics that you commonly see in a music video, this music video shows him playing an acoustic guitar a lot, the guitar is the main prop throughout this music video. The acoustic guitar is a traditional icon of love, and this is aimed towards someone
Mel-This shot is an establishing shot, it pans the surrounding areas and set a misty and dull environment. This is filmed travelling in a car and features a guitar solo, which amplifies the lonely feel to it.
Mel-One of the cinematography techniques is a close up, this is a long close up as it last for 5 seconds. The extended time allows for the viewer to see the emotion on his face. This contradicts the pop dance genre as close ups in that genre are fast cuts where as this is much slower. All the close ups seen is where James Morrison has his eyes closed representing how he is putting expression into the song and blocking out any problems.
Mel-This a Aerial/birds eye view shot, it is following him in the car while travelling. The use of birds eye view shots allows the viewer to notice the position and motion of the surrounding areas.
Mel-This is a long shot, it is applying its self to the rule of thirds. This represents how no one else is round him once again amplifying this feeling of being alone.
Alex-Editing within a music video is important, it can set the mood. It sets how fast the song is, there is many editing techniques from continuous editing ,fast cuts and slow motion. During a part of the music video where he is performing on his own, the tempo of the song quickly speeds up. This shows he is overcoming the problems with everyday life with the use expressing emotions. This is shown by the cutting of the video, it speeds up when he sings on his own
Alex-This is all shown in 8 seconds.
Alex- Another editing technique is shot reverse shot, this shot represents the difference between different situations, this particular one goes from him on his own to him performing. Through this technique we question our selves what is real and what isn't
Mel-Low key lighting is used regular during this music video, low key lighting represents that something is missing. In the screen shot below it shows his face blurry. This is different to the usual pop and dance genre where it is all about image and glamour, where as this love song is dark and gloomy. The shots where the lighting is very low-key, and the singer’s face cannot be seen very well could reflect and represent the overall theme of the video.
Mel- Another element of mise en scene is costume, The clothes used in this music video are very casual, however they change when he is performing on his own. Andrew Goodwin also talked about image, the costume can also reflect what kind of image the artist is trying to set, in this music video, James Morrison is dressed smartly when performing but also a casual vibe is given off.
