This study investigated whether spoken words are represented at both surface and underlying abstract levels. In 6 experiments, participants heard word primes followed by word targets. Primes and targets contained flaps (neutralized allophones of /t/ and /d/). Reaction times showed evidence for both surface and underlying representations - flapped primes facilitated targets containing the same phoneme, regardless of surface form. This supports theories proposing direct access to abstract representations from surface forms.

To answer the research question, 30 students were selected. Every ten people are formed as a group and three such groups were formed. Twenty figurative expressions were taught to every group. Group one was taught the figurative meaning of every expression. Group two was taught the literal meaning and group three was taught the salient meaning. Then three groups were tested. After analyzing data, we concluded that there was a significant difference in mean grades between classes and the class trained under graded salience hypothesis was more successful. This shows that traditional teaching methods must be revised.

In consideration of opaque multi-word combinations in widespread use and pedagogical value, the researcher applied a set of selection criteria when using the corpus. Based on frequency, meaningfulness, and semantic non-compositionality, a total of 318 non-compositional multi-word combinations of 2 to 5 words with the exclusion of phrasal verbs were selected and they accounted for approximately 2% of the total words in the corpus. The list, not highly technical in nature, contains the most commonly-used multi-word units traversing various topic areas and news readers may encounter these phrasal expressions very often. As with other individual word lists, it is hoped that this opaque expressions list may serve as a reference for English for Journalism teaching.

methods from statistical machine translation, we
induce word alignments in an unsupervised way,
from which we estimate lexical translation probabilities,

One of the main challenges posed in front of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teachers in developing syllabi at higher education level is the choice of vocabulary to be taught. This issue is particularly prominent in technical English, which apart from being abundant in nouns, requires students to learn the other highly frequent noun-based structures such as multi-word lexical units (MWLUs). Learning how to cope with these condensed structures both in reading and writing, will make the students competent and self-confident ESP users. The choice of lexical items is usually left to teachers’ intuition. This paper intends to assist teachers in avoiding addressing the issue by making such intuitive decisions, offering the model of incorporating the corpus-based vocabulary findings into their ESP syllabi instead. Thus, the research questions addressed in this paper are: Can a computer software extract all the nouns, MWLUs and multi-noun lexical units (MNLUs) with 100% certainty? What is their precise number in the pedagogical corpus of English for Traffic and Transport Purposes (ETTP)? The paper approaches the issue from the analytical point of view, i.e. by instructing the teacher-researcher step by step in analysing the pedagogical specialized corpora, including the possible problems they might encounter using irreplaceable, yet not completely accurate computer software for the purpose. The paper proposes original solutions to overcome the encountered imperfections in order to get accurate and evidence-based lists of most frequent nouns, MWLUs and MNLUs, making some extra effort by manually complementing the computer-based analysis. By applying the methodology proposed by this paper teachers-researchers will no more have to wonder which nouns and MWLUs and MNLUs to teach, since they can create accurate lists by themselves. Furthermore, a specialized pedagogical corpus analysis provides a valuable basis for creating glossaries and specialized minimum dictionaries, serving as a source for creating syllabi and lexis oriented exercises, as well as for designing language tests – all of it with the ultimate scope of improving students’ lexical competencies in a specific field of study.

pronoun will appear one time in one sentence and can appear in adjacent sentences. The computational
model is implemented in Prolog and based on applying and improving the models of Mark Johnson and
Ewan Klein, had been improved by Covington and Schmitz, with theoretical background of Discourse
Representation Theory.Analysis of test results shows that this approach which based on linguistic theories
helps for well solving inter-sentential anaphoric pronouns in Vietnamese paragraphs.

One of the main challenges posed in front of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teachers in developing syllabi at higher education level is the choice of vocabulary to be taught. This issue is particularly prominent in technical English, which apart from being abundant in nouns, requires students to learn the other highly frequent noun-based structures such as multi-word lexical units (MWLUs). Learning how to cope with these condensed structures both in reading and writing, will make the students competent and self-confident ESP users. The choice of lexical items is usually left to teachers’ intuition. This paper intends to assist teachers in avoiding addressing the issue by making such intuitive decisions, offering the model of incorporating the corpus-based vocabulary findings into their ESP syllabi instead. Thus, the research questions addressed in this paper are: Can a computer software extract all the nouns, MWLUs and multi-noun lexical units (MNLUs) with 100% certainty? What is their precise number in the pedagogical corpus of English for Traffic and Transport Purposes (ETTP)? The paper approaches the issue from the analytical point of view, i.e. by instructing the teacher-researcher step by step in analysing the pedagogical specialized corpora, including the possible problems they might encounter using irreplaceable, yet not completely accurate computer software for the purpose. The paper proposes original solutions to overcome the encountered imperfections in order to get accurate and evidence-based lists of most frequent nouns, MWLUs and MNLUs, making some extra effort by manually complementing the computer-based analysis. By applying the methodology proposed by this paper teachers-researchers will no more have to wonder which nouns and MWLUs and MNLUs to teach, since they can create accurate lists by themselves. Furthermore, a specialized pedagogical corpus analysis provides a valuable basis for creating glossaries and specialized minimum dictionaries, serving as a source for creating syllabi and lexis oriented exercises, as well as for designing language tests – all of it with the ultimate scope of improving students’ lexical competencies in a specific field of study.

This study examined the impact of cohesive devices in English textbooks on Iranian high school students' reading comprehension. 64 students were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group read passages from a textbook that highlighted cohesive devices, while the control group practiced past exam questions. Both groups took a pre-test and post-test of reading comprehension. Results of t-tests and effect size calculations showed that the experimental group performed significantly better on the post-test, indicating that exposure to cohesive devices in texts helped improve their reading comprehension. A correlation also suggested that students with higher English proficiency benefited more from the cohesive devices. The findings suggest explicit instruction of cohesive devices could aid EFL reading comprehension.

This study focuses on lexical ambiguity as polysemous words were proved to hinder meaning understanding. In an attempt to operationalize polysemous words from a cognitive perspective, the researcher deduces that metaphorical polysemy engenders words with basic and peripheral (or metaphorical) senses. Participants were asked to answer Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale II (MSTAT II). Then, they answered Wallach and Kogan Creativity Test, which revealed a slight positive relationship with MSTAT II. Furthermore, the results show two things. First, there is a positive relationship between creativity and semi-technical vocabulary tests scores. Second, there is a link between creativity level and understanding the prototypical meanings of words. Contrarily, MSTAT II and prototypical meanings tests scores correlation is very weak.

How (not) to do phonological typology: the case of pitch-accent

Abstract
In this paper I argue for a property-driven approach to phonological typology. Rather than seeking to classify or label
languages, the central goal of phonological typology is to determine how different languages systematize the phonetic sub-
stance available to all languages. The paper focuses on a very murky area in phonological typology, word-prosodic sys-
tems. While there is agreement that certain properties converge to characterize two prosodic prototypes, tone and
stress, the term ‘‘pitch-accent” is frequently adopted to refer to a defective tone system whose tone is obligatory, culmina-
tive, privative, metrical, and/or restricted in distribution. Drawing from a database of ca. 600 tone systems, I show that
none of these properties is found in all systems claimed to be accentual and that all five are amply attested in canonical
tone systems. Since all one can say is that alleged pitch-accent systems exhibit significant constraints on the distribution
of their tonal contrasts, they do not constitute a coherent prosodic ‘‘type”. Rather, alleged ‘‘pitch-accent” systems freely
pick-and-choose properties from the tone and stress prototypes, producing mixed, ambiguous, and sometimes analytically
indeterminate systems which appear to be ‘‘intermediate”. There thus is no pitch-accent prototype, nor can prosodic sys-
tems be treated as a continuum placed along a single linear dimension. The paper concludes that the goal of prosodic typol-
ogy should not be to classify languages, but rather the properties of their subsystems.

The goal of this paper is to argue for what I will term PROPERTY-DRIVEN TYPOLOGY, particularly as it applies
to phonology, which I will illustrate via some of the claims made about so-called pitch-accent languages.
Within the literature, there have been two ways of talking about typology (and by extension, phonological
typology). The first defines the goal of typology as the classification of languages according to their properties.
Thus, for Hagège (1992, p. 7), typology strives to provide ‘‘. . .a principled way of classifying the languages of
the world by the most significant properties which distinguish one from another.” Vajda (2001) takes a similar
position with respect to phonological typology: ‘‘. . .it is possible to classify languages according to the
phonemes they contain. . . typology is the study of structural features across languages. Phonological typology

Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

The authors attempted to determine whether surface representations of spoken words are mapped onto
underlying, abstract representations. In particular, they tested the hypothesis that flaps—neutralized
allophones of intervocalic /t/s and /d/s—are mapped onto their underlying phonemic counterparts. In 6
repetition priming experiments, participants responded to stimuli in 2 blocks of trials. Stimuli in the 1st
block served as primes and those in the 2nd as targets. Primes and targets consisted of English words
containing intervocalic /t/s and /d/s that, when produced casually, were flapped. In all 6 experiments,
reaction times to target items were measured as a function of prime type. The results provide evidence
for both surface and underlying form-based representations.

Discussion
The data for both Experiments 1 and 2 revealed no statistically
significant effects of specificity (articulation style) for alveolar
stimuli, whereas differences in articulation style for non-alveolar
stimuli completely blocked facilitative priming. In both experi-
ments, we obtained evidence that a flap activates its underlying
representations. Specifically, presentation of a flapped item facil-
itated processing of items containing either /t/ or /d/, and presen-
tation of carefully articulated items containing /t/ or /d/ facilitated
processing of flapped stimuli. The priming of flaps by carefully
produced items, and vice versa, indicates that shared underlying
representations are activated during processing. On the other hand,
