Ducks eat a variety of foods like plants, fish, insects, and mollusks. Dabbling ducks feed at the water surface or land while diving ducks forage underwater. Ducks have adaptations like a comb-like structure called a pecten to filter food from water and wide, flat beaks to pull up plants, worms, and frogs. Ducks are generally monogamous annually but some pairs bond for multiple years. Most duck species breed once yearly, making nests and leading ducklings to water, though mother ducks may abandon some if they cannot leave an area or are unhealthy.
