The birds were originally all black until a dove injured its leg on a stick while searching for food. When the other birds gathered around to help, except for crow, parrot used its beak to burst the blood from the dove's swollen foot, spreading color across all the birds' feathers. As a result of not helping, crow remained plain black while the other birds received various colors, patterns, and markings. The story explains how birds obtained their diverse plumage.
