The Yellowstone River runs through Billings, Montana and starts in Yellowstone National Park, eventually emptying into the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. It supports a diverse ecosystem, with algae and other plants providing food for small fish and crayfish, which larger fish, bears, and birds then prey upon. The river's landscape under water is muddy, rocky, and cold. It creates Earthquake Lake and never freezes over, and the surrounding animals all depend on the Yellowstone River as an integral part of the food chain.
