This document outlines the five stages of a materials economy: extraction takes natural resources from the earth like wood, coal, and water; production adds energy and chemicals to resources to make products; distribution transports and sells products; consumption involves purchasing and using products; and disposal gets rid of waste through dumping, burning, or recycling.
