This thesis examines how country of origin influences the corporate social responsibility (CSR) approaches of Brazilian and Norwegian oil and gas companies. Through interviews with 25 companies, the researcher finds that both internal and external factors shape CSR. Brazilian companies emphasize CSR due to civil society pressure and local NGO influence, while Norwegian companies are more impacted by political, economic and cultural institutions. However, local context also influences CSR practices. The researcher concludes that different institutional environments in Brazil and Norway lead companies in each country to adopt different CSR focuses, though all companies strongly commit to CSR.
