City of Boston Principal Data Scientist Curt Savoie discusses the City's open data portal, the state of open data, and the ways that citizens can help him make Boston a better place.
Georgetown Data Analytics Project (Team DC)
The team analyzed DC crime and neighborhood data from 2011-2014 to explore crime patterns and their relationship to property values. They cleaned and joined the datasets, then used Tableau, R and regression analysis to visualize crime incidents by neighborhood and examine the correlation between violent crime rates and property values. The analysis found negative correlations between violent crime types and property values, indicating violent crime impacts safety and wealth accumulation. A web app was created to map and track crime trends in real-time to provide residents and businesses insights into neighborhood crime risks.

Intro to Big Data in Urban GIS Research
Urban big data are increasingly being used in urban GIS research. This presentation, developed for an introductory GIS course, introduces the seven V's of big data: volume, variety, velocity, veracity, value, visualization, and variability. Major sources of urban big data include sensor systems, user-generated content, administrative systems, private sector data, humanities data, and hybrid data. These categories and the seven V's are illustrated with six examples of cutting-edge urban big data research: the Array of Things sensing network, Austin bike data, analysis of London's transport network, scraping Craigslist to analyze rental housing, the Mapping Inequality Project, and the EPA Smart Locations Database. The presentation concludes with a discussion of critiques surrounding the use of big data.
