I will be reviewing Edward Abbey s memoir during his time spent in southern Utah. In
his book, Desert Solitaire, Abbey illustrates how the Arches National Monument
evolves throughout time and including the time he spends there working as a park
ranger and observing the change throughout his adventures. The two thematic
concepts I will be incorporating onto his memoir are the urbanization and
development lenses. Throughout his memoir, Abbey ties in many thematic concepts
to each other, but only addressing to these two lenses will give a better description.
Thus both urbanization and development do play a role in the main point Abbey
portrays in Desert Solitaire. In the beginning of his memoir, Abbey shares his own

case by mentioning the United States third place ranking for the least amount of

automatically convey the false belief that private schools have a much better form of
education. In reality, education in a Public school is highly more advanced and

having no limitations nor boundaries that will minimize student s skills and
capabilities.
Public schools have been around for decades, and have formed one of our main
options to pursue an education in the 21st century. Researchers mentioned, We

school students in 15,108 public, charter, and private schools. What we found

having a variety of students who practice different types of religion, to having people

League
Recently, an increasing number of African American football players have been
leaving their respective colleges with years of eligibility left, to pursue a dream of
playing in the National Football League. This year alone, 101 athletes will be
forgoing their remaining years of college eligibility to enter the NFL draft. Thus
representing a staggering increase from the 40 early entrants in 2007 (Heitner). This
decision seems deceptive, in that it appears explicitly based on utility maximization
and the traditional economic theory of Becker and Stigler. That model does provide
an adequate explanation based on set universal preferences with efficiency
determining the price of commodities. However, I believe that it is more accurately
modeled as a function of a socially constructed framework of choice. Berger and
Luckmann s social construction theory presents the opportunity to understand more
fully the background of these athletes that shapes their decision making process. In
my analysis, utility maximization is embedded within this social construction
framework. Given this, not only can we understand the conventional economic
reasons for this decision, but also the socialization that shaped the individuals to that
point. I will demonstrate that the choices of these athletes can be analyzed by taking
into account how each person s preferences and efficiency is molded by their

People have always wanted there to be less crimes, and the internet is helping aid
government officials stop criminals in their tracks. Consequently, with the growth
of the internet, the government can keep more records of citizens than they once
could. Eamon Bailey, one of the founders of The Circle within the book, he
introduces a new type of mini camera that is designed to aid others in a plethora of
ways. One such way is helping law enforcement and cracking down on crime.
Bailey states, In a world where bad choices are no longer an option, we have no
choice but to be good (Eggers 292). His speech opens up the discussion on how the
government would be able define what is a good choice and what is a bad choice.

The Circle can be viewed as a precautionary tale. Mae s transformation into a cyborg
at the end of the book is a prime example that technology can have humans lose the
very qualities that define them. Though the rise of technology is not complete, it is
not too late to prevent the extreme invasion of privacy through the internet. People
can combat this by making sure to keep their private lives as private as they can.
